Tod-DD is legit if slow. they ship from a small town in Illinois and I have had no problems with them. And, their prices are good.

The German overdub ends on track 7 of disc 1, which has 28 tracks. A little male German voicing on track 1 of disc 2, but it seems (I haven't finished this disc) like uninterrupted music.

I've purchased several times from Deepdiscountcd and Deepdiscountdvd. No problems, but if the items are backordered, they are slow.

You can always buy from the guy on ebay who sells BEAR FAMILY boxes. I think his name is Wolfgang? (or CDWolf?)

Just pass him an email for his price, if it's not posted on ebay.

Mine showed up yesterday. I've listened only to Disc 1 so far, and yeah, the breathless German radio announcer is extremely intrusive, but you still get a good, raw sense of the live music. Wish there had been more of that actual performance, but the stuff they chose to fill out Disc 1 is good & interesting. Haven't listened to Disc 2 yet, which is almost all Ellington broadcasts from the club in 1938. Hopefully tonight! The book is great; I read the first 35 pages last night and hope to finish it this evening, but lots of great pix and interesting stories/biographies. At $47, definitely not disappointed...

Clem's right on target re: Bear Family. As much as I dig Mosaic, Bear Family's production definitely ups the ante... A couple of friends of mine have all of the ones Clem lists above and swear by 'em. These are the ones I have so far:

Carter Family

King Curtis

Louis Jordan

Julia Lee

Nellie Lutcher

Songs for Political Action (various)

Tennesse Jive (various)

and a big rec for this one:

Nashville Jumps (great collection of Nashville R & B indie labels from 1945-55, with people like Phineas Newborn and John Coltrane popping up on some tracks)

Ones I'd like to get include Piano Red and Songs of the Depression... fantastic label without a doubt.

Clandy--

Bear Family rules. Short list of their best country sets (I've had many over the years, still have some; if there were really "an economic recovery" in NYC I'd probably want 'em all):

Blue Sky Boys

Bill Monroe "Blue Moon of Kentucky" (blows Rounder away)

Cliff Bruner (blazing early western swing)

Wynn Stewart (dark horse candidate for best C&W singer of the '60s, George Jones included)

clem

How's the BLUE SKY BOYS set?

I'm kinda interested in that box set.

The Cliff Bruner and Wynn Stewart are on my list too. Don't know anything about Cliff Bruner. That Wynn Steart box is big (10-cds)! :w

Thanks TJazz for the heads up on Deep Discount

I recieved my set today

What an excellent product, I have never seen a Bear Family set before but I agree with ghost of miles that they up the ante

I only listened to a couple of tunes so I can't really comment on the music

:D

I just ordered (from Deepdiscountdvd) the Wynn Stewart. They sold it for $116, so for 10-CDs, I paid the price.

The Cliff Bruner set is selling for $69.31 at Deep

and Blue Sky Boys $83.91.

Both are 5-CD sets.

I have a feeling Cliff Bruner isn't a big seller.
