medjuck Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 I just finished reading the above titled book by Greg Milner. It should perhaps be subtitled "an anecdotal history" but the anecdotes are quite interesting if depressing. The most depressing chapter is about dynamic compression and clipping. In it he says that these techniques have begun to be used in jazz recordings though he doesn't name any. On the other hand he tells how the backlash against them began when a fan compared Chili Pepper' Californication (the worst mastered cd ever apparently) with some remasters of Miles and Trane records. I'm sure many audiophiles will agree with his contention that analogue is better than digital. But then he also suggest that acoustic recording is better than electric recording and that cylinders are better than discs. Even he seems to understand that that way lies madness. Quote
