Lazaro Vega Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Trumpeter Howard McGhee grew up in Detroit admiring Louis Armstrong's Decca big band recordings, but his band director handed him a clarinet. When he eventually did take up trumpet, under the spell of Roy Eldridge, the lessons on the woodwinds served him well: Maggie in the 1940's was second only to Dizzy Gillespie, though was eventually eclipsed by his own protege Fats Navarro. Smack took him out of the 50's, but he struggled back.
