Stefan Wood Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 It's worth it for the Jerry Hahn, the two Sonny Simmons and the Smiley Winters. I recommend all of those discs! Quote
kh1958 Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 It's worth it for the Jerry Hahn, the two Sonny Simmons and the Smiley Winters. I recommend all of those discs! I ordered the Jerry Hahn and one of the Sonny Simmons. That Earl Hooker CD, The Moon is Rising, is another one to get. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 There are some good ones on this list. I particularly like A New Orleans Visit Before Katrina. It feature various ensembles, including three tracks recorded on parade by the Treme Brass Band. I consider those to be some of the best New Orleans brass band recordings of the last 15 years - those bands just sound different on the street than in a club. Quote
paul secor Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Offhand, I can recommend the Chuck Guillery, Earl Hooker, Elder Roma Wilson, Sonny Simmons: Live in Paris, and the I Have To Paint My Face collection. Knowing Chris Strachwicz' (the owner of Arhoolie Records) releases in other genres, I'm sure that there are a lot of Mexican and Tex-Mex recordings on that list that are worth hearing, but I'm not familiar enough with that music to recommend anything. Neal Pomea Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin with Canray Fontenot - La Musique Creole The best portion of that cd was recorded by Dick Spottswood in Falls Church, Virginia in 1966 when Ardoin and Fontenot were returning to Louisiana from performing at the Newport Folk Festival. Probably the best black Creole music recorded since the 1930s. Accordion, fiddle, and triangle. Quote
Big Wheel Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 The sale is obviously over, but bumping this topic....just because. Been digging this label lately. That Treme Brass Band record is indeed very good - I'm a sucker for the Atlantic New Orleans Mosaic and this has the same energy of some of those bands. Other great Arhoolie sessions: Much of the sacred steel guitar stuff Clifton Chenier - Bogalusa Boogie Big Mama Thornton With Muddy Waters There's also a ton of unusual world music (early Hawaiian, Tonga, Samoa, Sarawak, Colombia, Peru) Quote
Head Man Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 It's worth it for the Jerry Hahn, the two Sonny Simmons and the Smiley Winters. I recommend all of those discs! I'd forgotten the Sonny Simmons were on Arhoolie. Yes, they're definitely worth getting...even at full price. Quote
kh1958 Posted February 22, 2013 Author Report Posted February 22, 2013 Actually, they are having a current sale--20% off with order of three or more. A few other good ones in the blues arena are: Big Mama Thornton, Ball and Chain; LIghtnin' Hopkins, Gold Star Sessions; Lowell Fulson, My First Recordings; Mance Lipscomb, Texas Songster and You Got to Reap What You Sow; the anthology Texas Blues; and Smokey Babe, Louisiana Country Blues.
