Dave James Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 I know Lyle Murphy's name has come up before in these parts, but I was listening to Gone With The Woodwinds yesterday, and I decided he was worthy of his own spot. If you've heard him before, then you know what I mean. If you haven't, you should give him a listen. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. In terms of deep background, here's a link to a column Marc Myers posted a few months go on his JazzWax blog: http://www.jazzwax.com/2009/12/lyle-murphy-west-coast-tonal.html As far as I know, Murphy only recorded twice under his own name. The aforementioned Gone With The Woodwinds and New Orbits In Sound. Joe Bob says check 'em out. Quote

The Lord Discography also lists three record sessions by the Lyle 'Spud' Murphy orchestra in 1938 (for Decca) and 1939 (for BlueBird, two sessions)). None of these have been reissued. Quote
