I found a website this week that some here living in the US might find interesting. It compares the prices of 2,500 magazines as offered by 25 websites, and links you to the best deal for each mag.

For example, 24 issues of Esquire for $8.00. 46 issues of New York for $5.00. I'm thinking about 305 issues of Financial Times for $99.00.

I bought my sister a 10-issue subscription to Every Day with Rachel Ray for $4.45, and for myself a year's subscription to Ellery Queen for $17.05.

I'm a magazine hound, with more than 75 subscriptions. I use Magazinepricesearch, but BEWARE, they're just a bot/an aggregator of information. They search several vendors, some of whom are reliable (bestdealmagazines), some of whom are not, and a few of whom have a little scam to their business (magazines.com has automatic renewals at higher prices).

Here's an interesting mag deal I have found. America's best selling short story magazine for 75 cents.

Dell publishes four digest (modern day pulp) fiction magazines - two mystery (Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock) and two sci-fi (Analog and Asimov).

I was surprised to read their claim that Alfred Hitchcock is "America's best selling short story magazine".

Dell is offering back issues of Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen, three for $2.25. Technically, it is $1.00 for the three mags, and $1.25 for the shipping.

You can order as many packs of three as you like, but if you order multiple packs they won't guarantee that every issue is different.

Dell chooses the issues. The offer is called the Dell Mystery Magazine Sampler Pack.

You're welcome Weizie!

I ordered three packs late Saturday night. I was delighted to find my package from Dell in the mailbox today. That's very quick for Media Mail.

However, I am somewhat disappointed in what they sent. Remember, the mags come in packs of three, and I ordered three packs. Well two of the packs they sent were identical. And the third pack had one issue that was included in both of the other packs.

So for my $6.75 I received five different issues. That comes to #1.35 each, which isn't bad, and I have four issues I can give away to friends and family.

By the way, one of the issues is an Ellery Queen Christmas issue, which I am very happy to receive.

Weizie, let us know if you have better luck with the packs you receive!

And was the subscription to Alfred Hitchcock or Ellery Queen?

Also ordered 3 packs. Same as you with the 1 Ellery/2 Hitch per pack....but we only had 3 dupes total -- Jan '07 (Ellery) + March & April '07 (Hitchcock). The remaining Ellery was the Feb. '07 issue.

Subscribed for 6 mos to both the Hitch and Ellery.

The two packs that I received last week which were identical had the 3 dupes you mentioned.

My second order (two packs) arrived today, and I received nothing I didn't get last week. The first pack had Jan 07 EQ and March and May 07 AH. The second pack had Feb 07 EQ and also had the same March and May 07 AH.

This week I have read the March 07 AH, and I found very little in the way of mystery. I think that that is no longer the case. AH now advertises that each issue has one of each type of mystery.

So to sum up, I purchased five packs total, at $2.25 each (incl. shipping), for a total of $11.25.

I received five different issues - 2 Ellery Queens and 3 Alfred Hitchcocks.

Here is what I received (with the number of copies):

Ellery Queen

Jan 07 (3)

Feb 07 (2)

Alfred Hitchcock

Mar 07 (5)

Apr 07 (2)

May 07 (3)

Weizie, did you receive any issues other than these five? If so, maybe we can work a trade!

So here we are three and a half years later, and I thought that I would look to see if this deal is still available to give as Christmas presents.

The current deal is different: 8 mags for $5.95, plus $3.75 shipping. So that's 8 mags for $9.70, or $1.21 each.

I ordered the 8 mags on Nov. 23, and they arrived today.

There are four of each:

Ellery Queen...

- August, 2009

- November, 2009

- December, 2009

- January, 2010

Alfred Hitchcock...

- June, 2009

- September, 2009

- October, 2009

- November, 2009

Well, at least they are all different from what I got three years ago!

I checked today, and there are two offers. I placed an order for both.

1) EQ and AH Mystery Value Pack - 8...$5.95 for 8 issues

2) Mystery Double Issue 12 pack...$15.95 for 12 double-issues

http://www.themysteryplace.com/order/order_ahmm.aspx

Both prices do not include shipping.

However, they have a special through Jan. 26: 25% off with the code MY25

The 25% discount is very close to the shipping cost.

*****

This same code (MY25) is also good for the Penny Dell puzzle mags. I had great luck giving them as Christmas presents, so I have ordered more for next Christmas.

This is somewhat related.  radioarchives.com is offering reprints of 1930s pulp fiction for $2.00 per book.  Each book has two novellas.  The mags are The Shadow, Doc Savage and The Spider.

The sale will end when the ball drops at midnight.
