B. Goren. Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I've recently listened to "Re-Entry", one of the three sessions Charles Sullivan (now Kamau Muata Adilifu) recorded as a leader, and enjoyed it a lot. Before I shell out my $$$, I'm interested in your opinion about his 2 other albums: "Kamau" & "Genesis". Any opinion??? Quote
JohnS Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I used to have the vinyl of Genesis but it went in a periodic clear out as it wasn't getting played. As i recall it was pretty much of it's time with added percusion. Nice but not essential imo. I've not come across Kamau but it looks interesting. Craig Handy and the Arabesque label are usually reliable. Quote
JSngry Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I don't think you'll have any complaints about either...Sullivan is a fine player. Genesis has the bonus of having Sonny Fortune on board, fwiw. Quote
Head Man Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Like you I bought the Charles Sullivan - Re-Entry release recently and thought it was excellent. I'd be interested in getting Genesis if I could find it for a reasonable price. Any offers anyone? Quote
marcello Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Genesis is great, in my opinion, but I have,t listened to it for a while. Sullivan used to be everywhere, back in those days. A really wonderful player and composer. 1974 Charles Sullivan, Alex Blake, Anthony Jackson, Lawrence Killian, Alphonse Mouzon, Billy Hart, L. Sharon Freeman, Onaje Allen Gumbs, Stanley Cowell, Sonny Fortune, DeeDee Bridgewater Quote
JSngry Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Also reissued on Inner City after Sullivan got the tapes back. Quote
B. Goren. Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 Thank you all. I ordered both, Kamau & Genesis (Amazon). Quote
B. Goren. Posted June 11, 2010 Author Report Posted June 11, 2010 Thank you all. I ordered both, Kamau & Genesis (Amazon). I really enjoyed both CDs this week. Thanks again. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 If you can find the old Sonny Fortune discs(one title is 'Waves of Dreams' IIRC)with Sullivan they are, as I recall, verrrrry good. Quote

Head Man Posted June 15, 2010 Report Posted June 15, 2010 Thank you all. I ordered both, Kamau & Genesis (Amazon). I managed to find a copy of Genesis for a reasonable price and it arrived this morning. What a terrific album - I've been playing it all day. He reminds me a lot of Woody Shaw but unlike Woody he's only had three albums released under his own name. Why? I've just put an order in for Kamau! Quote
