GA Russell Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Back in May I received a promo of the new album by a western swing singer named Retta Christie called With David Evans and Dave Frishberg, vol.2. I didn't think that anyone here would be interested, so I haven't mentioned it. But darned if I don't keep listening to it three months later. It's infectious! The album combines the western swing of the singer and the song selection with the cabaret piano playing of Frishberg and sax playing of Evans. Here's the link to the CDBaby site, so you can listen to it and make up your own mind. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/RettaChristie1 Quote
GA Russell Posted August 26, 2010 Author Report Posted August 26, 2010 I forgot to mention that the liner notes are by Doug Ramsey. Who would have guessed the pairing of Ramsey or Frishberg with a country swing singer? Quote
jazzkrow Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Frishberg lives here in Portland and when he is not playing in New York, he backs up both Rebecca Kilgore (on Arbors label) and lately enjoys playing with Retta, who has a great voice and a big following here in town. David Evans settled a few years ago in Portland and plays with many different folk. New Orleans transplant, Devin Phillips, saxophonist from New Orleans, came here soon after Katrina. Bassist David Friesen also makes his home here. Esperanza Spaulding went to high school here before she took off for New York and stardom. Quite an active scene here in Portland, but only one jazz club, Jimmy Maks, where the great drummer Mel Brown plays several days a week. Happily, Curtis Fuller, will be coming to town next month to play with Mel Brown's band Quote
