At 6' 7" pianists don't come much bigger. Imbued with a sense of his African heritage from a young age Randy was destined to explore the roots of the music resounding around Brooklyn in the 1930s, the blues, calypso and jazz. He not only grew up in a musical family, but in a musical neighbourhood. Max Roach and Eubie Blake were neighbours and the young Randy would hang out at the home of Thelonious Monk absorbing the language of music. Perhaps best known for his much covered bop standard "High Fly" and "Little Niles", Weston's major contribution to jazz has been a celebration of the origins of the music which began with his first ever recordings and continues to this day, witness the recent album Spirit! The Power of Music. While that record documents a magical series of concerts reuniting Randy Weston with the Gnawa Master Musicians of Morocco, tonight's concert is a rare opportunity to hear him solo
