Rooster_Ties Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) I bought a couple Ornette CD's from somebody on-line, and what I got in the mail today were really high-quality CDR's (semi-uggh!) I say "semi-", because they're both in remarkably high-quality packaging, with full-color printing on the face of the CD itself(!). The discs were "Of Human Feelings" and "Opening the Caravan of Dreams", and although I got ripped off - I guess I didn't pay all that much for them ($12 each), and given their rarity, I guess I should have been a little more "buyer beware" in the first place. Anyway, of all things, the copy of "Of Human Feelings" has a bonus track: "Dancing in Your Head" from Jamaaladeen Tacuma's 1984 album "Renaissance Man" - which I had never heard before. Question: Is that the ONLY Jamaaladeen Tacuma track that Ornette plays on from the 80's and/or 90's (or 00's)? (I realize there's a MUCH more recent Tacuma album that Ornette is on (just in the last year or two, the most recent Ornette thus far released, in fact). But other than that, is this one track the ONLY thing released under Tacuma's name, that Ornette's on?? It's a really nice track (its drum machine doesn't bother me, I'm afraid), and it fits in well with "Of Human Feelings", actually -- and expands the date to a more respectable album-length affair too. Amazingly, the packaging that came with this thing has all the personnel listed for both "Of Human Feelings" AND also for the bonus track (even identifying where it came from). The tray-card has graphics on both side (visible through the clear tray-case), everything looks like a million bucks (including the discs themselves). Hell, "Of Human Feelings" includes ALL the credits on the original album too (something like 15 in all). But no UPC codes (which was the first giveaway). But, I have to say that I almost don't feel all that ripped off (even if I would have MUCH preferred legit copies, of course - cuz I really hate burns). Oh, my other question: Am I right in assuming there never was and never has been any "with that bonus track" CD issue of "Of Human Feelings"?? I know the date came out in Japan on CD (I've even seen somebody else's copy once even -- without any bonus tracks). BTW, I imagine for dates like this (that are near impossible to find), this will become more common. Edited May 24, 2011 by Rooster_Ties Quote
ep1str0phy Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 I haven't heard it, but Ornette plays on the album "So Tranqulizin'" by Cosmetic w/Jamaaladeen Tacuma. I haven't heard good things. I have the "Of Human Feelings" Japanese issue, and there are no bonus tracks. Quote
jeffcrom Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) I bought Of Human Feelings on CD when it came out, back in the day. I never really thought of it as an "import," since most CDs in those early days were made in Japan, but yes, it's the Antilles/Polystar Japanese issue. No bonus tracks. I also bought Tacuma's Renaissance Man on vinyl in 1984. It's pretty good - side one is by his working Philadelphia band, while side two is more varied; Ornette, David Murray, Vernon Reid, Bill Bruford all appear on various tracks.
