Lazaro Vega Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Like Pops Foster, the New Orleans born bassist Wellman Braud help popularize the string bass in jazz, especially during his 1927-35 association with Duke Ellington where his drive, swing and big sound found a solid setting; and because, like Foster, he lived into the New Orleans revival and was documented with Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet and Bunk Johnson. Braud's recordings tonight, as well as a first listen to the 1965 Roscoe Mitchell Quartet recording Before There Was Sound, and a celebration of Chicago tenor sax giant Von Freeman.
