And he's bringing Uri Caine and Chris Potter with him!

Jazz from Bloomington proudly presents the Dave Douglas Quintet in a concert at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre (115 E. Kirkwood, in downtown Bloomington), Friday, February 13, 8:00 p.m.

Dave Douglas is arguably the most renowned composer and trumpet artist in

jazz today. The Dave Douglas Quintet is one of several bands he currently

leads. The Quintet consists of:

  Dave Douglas, trumpet

  Chris Potter, saxophones

  Uri Caine, piano

  James Genus, bass

  Clarence Penn, drums

If she loves you she will go. Particularly if you pay for her ticket, as I'm doing with my wife. ^_^

I was thinking along the same lines as you, but Dave Douglas can be some heady stuff....I'm worried she won't dig it. She has a hard enough time with Roy Hargrove.

This is my first post at the Organissimo Forums. Some of you may remember me from old BNBB or AAJ Forums. I have been a regular visitor to this forum for a long time, but I just didn't registar until 2 minutes ago!

Anyway, this is a great news!!! I was dying for great live jazz since the Tast of Indy Jazz Fest in September. I will definitely go to this concert. I hope my fiancé is okay with this.

I noticed Ingrid Jensen will be there in April. I should go to her concert, too!

Jazzmessenger, you're from Indy, I take it... did you make the show last night? They opened with the title track from STRANGE LIBERATION, but didn't really start snapping into their groove, I thought, until the second piece... a new one (tentatively titled "Shape of Things to Come") that highlighted the suspended, urban-compulsive tension that seems to be at the heart of Douglas' quintet sound. Evidently this was their opening show on the tour. Nice version of "Skeeter-ism" from the new album, with a long, amusing intro by Douglas about how his 7-year-old inspired it... Great to hear Uri Caine live on the Fender Rhodes, and Clarence Penn gave the band some needed kick on percussion. Chris Potter seemed a bit withdrawn for the first half of the set but really caught fire by the end, particularly on a long number that I think was based on some Miles head (driving me crazy that I can't think of the name). Hope others on the board get a chance to catch this group on tour; Sal, will you be at the Green Mill tonight?

Probably going to see the quintet in Athens GA Monday night. Saw them on their "Infinite" tour when Rick Margitza was subbing for Chris Potter. Clarence Penn was the standout performer that night - Uri Caine was in great form too.

Ghost,

I did make the show on Friday night. All the songs sounded very fresh as I haven't heard his new album before the show. It really showed that they have been playing together for a long time. It was a very tight unit. I really enjoyed the show.

I am sure I will be down there again for Ingrid Jensen. I didn't know Bloomington bring in very good national artists until your post on Dave Douglas. Thanks for alerting us for Bloomington jazz happenings!

I'm glad to see that a few board members have gotten to catch these guys live. I did make the show at the Green Mill, that being my first time ever seeing a Dave Douglas show. I was expecting an incredible evening, and I got more than that. What I got was a night of absolutely mind-bending, innovative jazz unlike anything I've ever heard. For those who question or challenge Dave Douglas' stature in jazz based on what they've heard on CD, I'd tell them to see these guys in person. I have 8 of his CDs, yet hearing them live, I was completely unprepared. The first set was alot like the set ghost of miles described, except that Chris Potter was on fire right from the start, and the band stayed on point through two engaging sets, functioning like a well oiled-machine. They seemed like one, and they were undoubtedly fueled by the VERY enthusiastic and LARGE crowd that packed the Green Mill to its maximum occupancy. I didn't get to stay for the third set unfortunately, but the two sets I saw did more than satisfy. I look forward to seeing these guys again in the future. Definitely some of the most exciting jazz I've ever seen or heard.

I'm glad that you caught it, Jazzmessenger! I was sitting with my wife up in the balcony on the left (Uri Caine) side. You probably heard Pat Harbison's pre-show rap about Jazz From Bloomington; that's the group that brings people to town (along with a very cool collective called Beyond the Pale, which promotes improv heavily--musician and Jazzcorner poster Jason Bivins used to be in it--they tend to bring Vandermark/modern Chicago artists down a lot).

Sounds like you caught a good show too, Sal. I've got to make it to the Green Mill one of these days (or nights, rather).

I made it down to the Mill for this as well. Sal's reamrks are dead on. And after catching a whole bunch of jam bands as of late, it was absolutely refreshing. I wish the band had played some music off of The Infinite (as it is the same band). Maybe they did, the on stage versions of the stuff off of Strange Liberation was pretty far removed from the album. But it was all stunning stuff, and the group interaction was fascinating. And I keep finding myself going, "oh shit, I forgot how completely bad ass Uri Caine is!!!!"

Potter was absolutely sick as well, and James Genus laid down one of the most beautiful bass solos I've ever, ever, ever heard.

Had I not had prior plans, the idea was to go down to Bloomington, catch him there and then zing back to Chicago for the Green Mill show. But, alas, my brain is still recovering from having been melted by one show, two would have killed me. But what a way to go...

You should. Let me know if you do. Every so often they have some really great shows. Just remember one thing.......get there early!! Good seats go very fast.

I'll second that.

What a moment that was.

Ghost,

I spent almost 10 years in Columbia, a college town in Missouri. There was a similar non-profit jazz organization directed by Jon Poses, who is a pretty well-known jazz writer. I didn't get into jazz until several years ago, but he brought in a lot of national artists like Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson etc while I was there. But I was always disappointed by the fact that not many students are in the audience. So, I was naturally surprised by the number of students (appear to be) at the Dave Douglas concert. Considering the fact that IU has a good jazz program and Mizzou doesn't, it is kind of expected. But still, it was good to see many young kids sitting in the front row.

I was sitting in the very front row on the right (Chris Potter side). I was shooting some photos during the first song, so you may have noticed me. I am planning to join JfB next month or so.
