Pete C Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 As an arranger, Paul Jeffrey used very idiosyncratic voicings, but I don't know how best to describe what he was doing. Can anybody explain? The easiest examples to find are his work for Mingus--the last Atlantic albums as well as the session for Lionel Hampton's Who's Who series (and this one most has the sound I remember from seeing Jeffrey's Octet live). Pete C Posted January 6, 2012 Author Report Posted January 6, 2012 Can anybody explain? I guess not To put it another way, it's sort of like a milder second cousin to Threadgill's voicings in that there's a hint of dissonance in the harmony, and the sound is a unique signature, but everything fits. As a layperson, however, I don't know how they get those effects. Quote
