A couple of resources I've bookmarked for my quarterly-or-so trips:

http://www.lajazz.com/index.cfm - news, calendar, links

http://www.catalinajazzclub.com/ - major jazz venue

http://www.jazzandblues.org/index.aspx

http://www.jazzbakery.org/

http://www.jazzandblues.org/index.aspx - radio station with more local info

Locals (Ray?) should have more ideas.

the only thing i'm aware of for those dates is our very own Jim Alfredson with blues singer Janiva Magness at McCabe's in Santa Monica on the 17th.

If anyone's interested in the McCabe's show, be advised that the last one sold out. So get your tix early!

Unfortunately my favorite source for picks - Brick's column in the L.A. Weekly - is no more. It's still early for March, but let me check.

Much thanks for the help - that LAJazz.com list looks especially extensive. Is there also maybe a web site or a newspaper column devoted to free jazz/outside jazz/underground jazz?

LA Jazz used to have a newspaper available in record stores throughout the Southland, but I haven't seen it lately. It wasn't really much for outside the mainstream. In fact, it had a bias toward jazz/pop vocals. But give 'em credit, lots of local talent.

I live in San Bernardino and the above list is the best I've seen in a long time. I am only 75 miles from LA but 75 miles in west coast traffic is "forever." Since I have not been on the scene in a long time, I would think once you get started with the above references, you will quickly find out where things are.
