High in the Hollywood Hills here, in a modern three-level house with a balloon's view of the city, Mike Stoller sat down at a baby-grand piano in his home office. Dressed in a navy-blue crewneck sweater and jeans, he began to play his iconic intro to "Stand By Me"—a song he co-wrote in 1960 with singer Ben E. King and lyricist Jerry Leiber. "The record was built on this bass line—which came to me when Ben originally sang the song at our office," Mr. Stoller said. "Simple, right?"
