The way Max Roach opened up his 1960's band sound using tone clusters to augment the series of chord changes, as well as his rhythm section's method of playing free around the pulse, it's no wonder he later embraced and performed with Anthony Braxton and Cecil Taylor, those icons of new musical methods for improvisation. For that matter, Roach's work with Bird is avant-garde. Tonight on Jazz From Blue Lake, 10 p.m. - 12 a.m., we'll listen to "Freedom Day," "Man From South Africa," and "Lonesome Lover" from his 60's bands, then later, with his 1980's era Double Quartet featuring Cecil Bridgewater and Odean Pope, "A Little Booker" and "Hi Fly." Hope you'll tune in, http://www.bluelake.org/radio.html
