Dallas & jingles used to be Bread and Butter. The whole point of getting in a "lab band" for many people was to work up and get an in into that scene. From there led the way to all the other serious money gigs.

Several generations of musicians thrived, even if it left the "lab band" scene fatally corrupted as far as "real jazz" went more often than not.

3:56-:3:58 = a Giant Steps cop, directly. The guys making these things were not oblivious, just...industrial.

I think I might have taken an arranging class with a guy who wrote some of these things, not sure. He was definitely out of that world, just not sure about these...incredible ear the guy had, just not "of the same world" as "serious jazz" to put it mildly..., still had incredible skills, he did, I'm still equal parts pissed off and in awe when remembering his classes). He nearly had a seizure when I did a chart on "Played Twice", went off into some otherworldy eyes rolling up in his head rant about "ugliness" and all that...I jsut had to tell him, hey, it was my call, I liked it, it's Monk, get the hell over it, every note in there is justified, which shut him up even if it didn't calm him down....but all was well when I did "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love".

Apparently Monk inhabits the Post-Jingle Zone but a Mingus ballad is useful. Some kind of world, eh?
