Back in early September 2012, Red was working hard in his garage trying to convert it into a music studio. It was a muggy day in Austin and there were mosquitoes in the garage with him. After his work day was done, Red noticed that he had numerous mosquito bites on his body. Little did he know that one of those mosquito bites would give him a severe case of viral meningitis. A very serious medical condition that if not treated, can be deadly. Red started feeling poorly within a week but chalked it up to the flu, as the symptoms are very similar. As his condition worsened, so did his symptoms. He had severe, debilitating headaches, no energy, no appetite and nausea. Red is a working musician with no medical insurance and he could hardly afford to take any time off, much less go see a doctor.

Finally, on September 19, after seeing Red suffer terribly with his condition, his wife Silvie took Red to the ER where they spent 4 hours testing Red. Incredibly, they sent him home with no diagnosis. Over the next 3 weeks, Red took two more trips to the hospital and spent a total of 9 days there, trying to rest and recover. He was very ill and there is no treatment for viral meningitis other than bed rest.
