Lazaro Vega Posted August 14, 2013 Report Posted August 14, 2013 Pianist/educator Ran Blake was a waiter at the Jazz Gallery starting in October, 1960, about the time Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln were preparing material to record on the albums "We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite," "Straight Ahead," and "Percussion Bitter Sweet" by performing live there every night. When Blake appeared at the 2012 Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, and met several of Lincoln's family and high school classmates, he included a 9 page program essay called "Nostalgia Noir: Abbey's Influence on Ran." We'll cull from his notes during Jazz From Blue Lake Tonight and feature Abbey Lincoln, as well as the recording of Blake's Kalamazoo concert.
