neveronfriday Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 OK, this one didn't cost me much, but I'm still wondering. This is the 1998 Polygram/Verve digipack edition (taken from the remastered 18-CD Complete Evans on Verve) and maybe it's just me, but is this thing majorly distorted at just about every turn or did I have too much Tanqueray? Ouch. Quote
Parkertown Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Now that you mention it, it did seem kinda distorted to me when I played that disc last week. But also, it put me to sleep so fast I can't really give further comment. Can't say its a favorite, but this disc makes an easier listen to this session than the box set, with it's copious alternate takes... Should probably compare the two and see if the box set shares the distortion. Quote
neveronfriday Posted February 17, 2004 Author Report Posted February 17, 2004 Would be great if you could do that, because I really think my CD is screwed up. I had that once with another CD which turned to be a faulty first pressing. Cheers! Quote
tjobbe Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Hi deus, will list to this in the car later on.. I've got the single CD from the Verve by request series Cheers, Tjobbe Quote
neveronfriday Posted February 17, 2004 Author Report Posted February 17, 2004 Hi deus, will list to this in the car later on.. I've got the single CD from the Verve by request series Cheers, Tjobbe Looking forward to your comments. It's the same CD I have ... and I gave it a solid listen on my Sennheisers again and it is definitely majorly distorted ... especially the first couple of tunes. It could be the original recording, but here I think the mastering is at fault. I don't have time to cross-reference with my pretty extensive Evans collection (I've got work coming out of my ears) ... Cheers! Quote
brownie Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I've given the MGM Stereo LP version of this a quick hearing and I don't hear distortion - unless you call distorted the sound of the electric piano! No way am I going to check the version from the Bill Evans Verve box which is getting rust somewhere in the place I call home. One hearing of this music is enough for me tonight. I am a huge fan of Bill Evans but that easy listening album is one of the absolutely non-essential Evans records. Quote

And easy listening? True, but it beats Kenny G. anytime. Call me completist. Quote
tjobbe Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 (edited) I guess I know what you're after Deus... it might be that only the elctric piano sounds a little bit distorted as brownie mentioned... I tried to keep the ear directly in front of the midrange/tweeters at left/right speakers and tke left sounds ok while the right electric one sounds really a bit strange.... but anyway.. not my favourite B.Evans.... neveronfriday Posted February 17, 2004 Author Report Posted February 17, 2004 It's not the electric piano. This is much more. I think it' just a faulty pressing. But, no loss, as everyone has stated here. Thanks again for checking, everyone. Cheers! Quote
Parkertown Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Okay, finally did my listening last night. I think you must have a bad pressing, because both versions of mine sounded fine. I'd say "Easy Listening" is putting it mildly. Quote
Parkertown Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Or, too much Tanqueray indeed! B) Quote
Shrdlu Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 I've known the LP since it was new, and now have the digipack CD, plus all the (many!) extra tracks in the box set - neatly avoiding the rust by getting a burn from a friend. I love this music, and have greatly enjoyed the out-takes, especially the many takes of "Why Did I Choose You?". I have never noticed any audio problems, though I don't like the Fender-Rhodes piano in large doses. A little goes a long way. Bill was never very keen on it, either - he said that the action on them stank. I think that "easy listening" is an unfair description, though I understand why this would be said. This term, or "cocktail piano", has also been applied to Red Garland's work (which I also like a lot). Quote
