"sound of jazz" (1957 tv) dvd versions

the full show on the vhs release is 58 minutes.

the u.s. dvd version is a bad transfer from vhs, and probably missing the monk performance.

the european dvd versions issued by the IDEM label are 2 sided pal/ntsc discs, have the complete show with monk, excellent quality. but both the pal and ntsc sides are speeded up 4% for pal, and the total time is 55 minutes.

I tried hard to get it legally released using the best possible print which I believe is the one at the UCLA tv archive. (The got it from director, Jack Smight.) I wanted to do new interviews with some of the musicians and Nat Hentoff as well as use some of Milt Hinton's photos form the session. Got pretty far with what was then CBS/Fox video but was then told that the musicians union demands made the cost prohibitive.

BTW I've seen version without Monk as well as version with and without commercials.

the billie holiday/lester segment is always mentioned when this show is discussed, but the ultimate highlight of that show is 'dickie's dream'!
