Hot Ptah Posted June 22, 2018 Report Posted June 22, 2018 Did John Coltrane record the song which is Track 3? Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 I think that Track 3 is “Village Blues,” from Paul Gonsalves’ album “Boom Jackie Boom Chick”. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted June 23, 2018 Author Report Posted June 23, 2018 You nailed it. I just picked up a Phono CD of this recording. I thought Paul Gonsalves playing a John Coltrane work would be of interest. Quote

I had never heard of bassist Kenny Napper and drummer Ronnie Stevenson, who I enjoy greatly on this track. I have not heard Paul Gonsalves play in this style. It is very interesting that he recorded a Coltrane composition in 1964. I have to get this album. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted June 23, 2018 Author Report Posted June 23, 2018 Jazz Messengers has it. I had long wanted to hear it and was unaware of the John Coltrane piece being on it. Quote
BillF Posted June 23, 2018 Report Posted June 23, 2018 Kenny Napper and Ronnie Stevenson were regulars in the house band - often with Stan Tracey on piano - at the Ronnie Scott Club in London at the time (1964), though Pat Smythe - Joe Harriott's pianist - is on piano here. I saw all of the above mentioned many times in clubs, but only saw Gonsalves in concert settings in the Ellington orchestra. Although listed as "Village Blues", it does vary slightly from Coltrane's original riff. (This is my excuse for not recognizing it.) Quote

It was driving me crazy though because I could tell it was a pre-1965 Coltrane tune, so I started listening to Coltrane until I found the closest match. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted June 24, 2018 Author Report Posted June 24, 2018 It was close enough that I identified it when I first played the CD, without looking at the track list. That works best for me, as it makes me pay closer attention. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 26, 2018 Report Posted June 26, 2018 Is the pianist on Track 2 better known as an inside player, a more mainstream player? Quote

Ken Dryden Posted June 26, 2018 Author Report Posted June 26, 2018 Wait for the reveal or keep guessing... Quote
