AACM Big Band

There will be a $15 donation at the door with proceeds going to the family of Malachi Favors.

In 1965 “Favors” as he was affectionately known to many joined AACM. Shortly after, Jazz great Roscoe Mitchell recruited

Favors to become a member of The Art Ensemble of Chicago. The original group featured Favors on the bass, Mitchell on the

Sax, Joseph Jarman playing the reed, Lester Bowie as the trumpeter and Don Moye as drummer.

Favors would transcend into his music by painting his face African-style to blend in with the spirits in the music. The face

painting was partly inspired by a picture of Charlie Parker adorned in full African tribal garb. All this compliments Favors guru

aura and strong identification with the black avant-garde. He often used a stage name, Maghostut (An African word meaning “

I am your host”) and has been known to claim he lived 43,000 years.

Malachi (Maghostut) departed this life on Friday, January 30, 2004 at 9:45pm His favorite praise was “Hallelujah to God!”

Please come join us in celebration of his life and music.
