Sorry to hear that. He was not easy to deal with, but he did help me on several occasions, for which I'm grateful. His reissues were excellent, no exceptions. My favourites are the Basie, Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman and Lunceford discs; I'm probably forgetting one or two others.

This may be of interest to EU residents - the upcoming Vanguard Piano Mosaic can now be pre-ordered from Belgian store TYQMusic:
Classic Vanguard Jazz Piano Sessions - Limited Edition Box Set | TYQmusic -
Got the Lyons a while ago from CDJapan and hated the sound, way too loud for my liking. The old needledrop I have sounds better.
-
I'm looking fior this CD-set in at least Exc condition - box and booklet included:
Please contact me via PM if you have one for sale. Payment via PayPal, but not friends/family. I'm in the Netherlands.

I am still waiting some european dealers for the V discs, and now this news... Anyone in Europe know something?
Look here: Belgian store TYQMusic
Owner Mark Steyaert told me a few days ago that he has plenty of V-Disc sets in stock. He'll surely get the Vanguard set as well.

The V-Disc Mosaic can now also be pre-ordered on the site of Belgian store TYQMusic; price 189 euros + shipping:

I don’t want to temper you’re joy but there are post companies that send a bill afterwards….
Correct. If the set was delivered by FedEx they will send a VAT bill (plus handling fee) some time after delivery.

Most likely you will have to pay Polish VAT + "processing fee". If the order is more than €150 there will be import tariffs as well.
Within the EU only the applicable VAT is due (and probably a handling fee) when importing CDs from outside the EU, and NO import tariffs when the total value of the order exceeds 150 euros. I checked the Dutch tax authority's site but it applies throughout the EU - scroll down to "BTW (VAT) en invoerrechten (tariffs) voor veel gekochte producten" - go to CDs, and there the tariff is 0.

Belgian store TYQMusic is listing the upcoming Bobby Hutcherson Mosaic at a (for EU residents) very attractive price:Their service and packaging are excellent.

Pre-ordered as well.
Actually, I mistakenly ordered 2 copies because I did not think that my original order had gone through since, after submitting my online order, an error message asked me to click on the "Create an account" box. I then went back and re-ordered. I called my cc company and, unfortunately, they confirmed 2 charges. I left an online message for Mosaic to cancel, and refund my cc, for the erroneous order. Hopefully they will do so promptly.
I am looking forward to this set!
Better mail Scott personally: Mosaic mail

Miraculously my set arrived without VAT or import duties.
You may be in for an unpleasant surprise: if the set was shipped by FedEx they will send you a VAT invoice separately, usually within one or two weeks of delivery. Note that only VAT (21% in the Netherlands) and a handling fee wiil be due, no import duties, CDs are exempt from import duties in the EU.

TYQMusic's prices for Mosaic sets are usually lower than Jazz Messengers'.

The place in Belgium, TYQ Music (I think it is called) seem to have it in stock.
Message to self - order from them or JM in future to save a load of hassle and delay.
TYQMusic do not have it in stock. The owner, Mark Steyaert, told me yesterday Mosaic had informed him that something had gone wrong with TYQMusic's order, and it won't be filled until mid- or late January at the earliest.

Just preordered BUT Vat included and I’ll pay it again to the shipper AND 40$ international shipping to Italy, not a bargain for sure.
If you ordered directly from Mosaic there is no VAT included, they do not use the EU IOSS ("Import One Stop Shop") scheme as far as I know. Within the EU you pay VAT on arrival of an order from outside the EU, unless the non-EU seller uses IOSS, in that case VAT is charged at check-out if the total value does not exceed 150 euros, and no VAT is due on arrival.
By the way - and this might be of interest to EU residents - Belgian store TYQMusic is currently offering the Byas Mosaic for 189 euros (pre-order) plus shipping. They told me they're expecting the set mid- or late December: TYQMusic

I would definitely buy a Mary Lou Williams set. My guess is they thought of it long ago and didn't produce it - not because they are biased against female musicians but because they encountered difficulties licensing the material or getting it at prices which fit their model.
Exactly. Their projected Lucky Thompson set was also killed by licensing issues many years ago.

Mosaic made a fatal mistake of getting out of vinyl when everyone else were getting into it. And I don't mean the "original get-out", but the "second get-out". I think they would've done very well, had they kept at it. Just look at what some of their oop vinyl sets are going for on eBay.
Again, LPs turned out not to be economically viable for them; after all, they're only a 3-man operation these days without the resources to handle post-sales care in case of defective LPs - one of the problems with that format according to the many complaints about bad pressings etc.

While licensing issues can be difficult, they may not be insurmountable. Look at their James P. Johnson set - licensed from many different labels and rights owners.
Sometimes they are, as was the case with the projected Lucky Thompson set years ago. As I understand it a Mary Lou Williams set was also considered at one time, but that was dropped just because of licensing issues.
-
Mosaic's release policy has been discussed here many times, and people tend to forget that they can't afford releases anymore that are not expected to sell well. Their Select series was terminated because it was not economically viable; same with LP sets. There's also the problem of licensing issues, especially when artists recorded for many different labels with different owners, who are often reluctant to license those recordings to be collected in one set - case in point: a Mary Lou Williams set; that will probably never happen, just because her recordings are all over the place. People have also often wondered why downloads are not offered by Mosaic - simple, rights owners refuse to license downloads to Mosaic.

Anecdotal evidence. I worked in a jazz record store in the late '70's - early '80's in lower Manhattan, and I saw what people bought. Straight-ahead jazz, classic jazz, soul jazz, smooth jazz, jazz-rock all sold. Avant-garde really didn't, and this was in lower Manhattan. I remember when the Braxton Arista box came in, the one with four orchestras, and it didn't move; none of the Braxton titles did. We had Sun Ra titles in the original Saturn packaging; didn't move. And then the argument was, well, avant-garde didn't have good distribution behind it. Then PolyGram took over distribution of Black Saint and Soul Note. The Soul Notes sold pretty well; the Black Saint titles didn't.
I don't recall that they sold out.
As far as I know they didn't, the licenses expired.

Brutally said, but unfortunately accurate in a way. Smaller boutique labels are making money on jazz reissues, most of them via LP but still, there's a market because CDs are selling. Mosaic could get in but I guess they're not interested which I find a bit weird. Not sure why a Universal-owned line like them couldn't revisit some of the Selects for reissue (the good ones would fly off the shelf), then use that revenue to buoy some other projects. Oh well.
Mosaic won't be releasing LPs again because of the many problems with pressings and things like that, and the financial consequences of having to replace faulty copies etc. Having seen the horror stories on another forum I can fully understand that.

I'm 76 and don't exactly remember when I got my first Mosaic, but it was soon after they started.
