  1. The liner notes to "One Step Beyond" tell the great story of McLean meeting Williams.
  2. I agree. Any recording with Bud Powell is worth listening to, and this one is just superb.
  3. It was revelatory because I've listened to Schubert for years, but Schiff's playing made it new to me.
  4. Digable Planets and Tribe Called Quest hold up just fine, but it's not jazz.
  5. Steeplechase in the 70s is gold. I forget that they kept putting out records after that.
  6. Right. I'm partial to the Wynton/Stanley Crouch argument, but some of the free and avant grade stuff can be cool (especially Andrew Hill... or Anthony Braxton, at least when Braxton plays the compositions of others). When I had a radio show I used to play Ornette Coleman a lot. The times I saw Peter Brötzmann live count among my most treasured musical experiences. My wife doesn't care for jazz, but even she was riveted as we sat just a few feet away from him and Hamid Drake. But I never find myself reaching for my Brötzmann or Coleman records. I'm not sure that kind of thing really works on record. Thank you all for the suggestions.
  7. I can't overstate how ignorant I am of jazz between say 1980 and 2005. Just trying to get an idea of what records stand out to listeners in the 90s so I can listen around and see what sounds good to me. Bebop and hard bop are elastic and open enough as styles to allow for at least a century or two of genuine experimentation and creativity... I have no position on the Wynton Wars because I just don't know his music very well. I remember that record he did with Jennifer Sanon being pretty good, but I haven't listened to it in a decade.
  8. Schiff's ECM recordings of Schubert (on a period instrument) have been a revelation for me this year. His essay in the liner notes is well worth reading. There's a subtlety to the fortepiano that made Schubert new to me. It was as if listening to him for the first time. https://www.ecmrecords.com/shop/143038752064/franz-schubert-andras-schiff https://www.ecmrecords.com/shop/1548146073/franz-schubert-sonatas-impromptus-andras-schiff
  9. I'm happily stuck listening to Blue Note releases from the 50s and 60s, but I thought it'd be nice to try a more recent decade. Record recommendations welcome!
  10. I went to a record store yesterday to buy a gift for my mother-in-law and on a whim grabbed a late Jackie McLean album, Rhythm of the Earth (1992). McLean's albums from the 50s and 60s, especially those with Grachan Moncur III, are as good as it gets for me, so it was interesting to hear what he was doing at the end of his career. It's a good record! But I realized while listening to it that I know nothing about jazz in the 90s. What am I missing? What has held up?
  11. Yeah, I have a tendency to get really into an album and play it a lot (notice how many times the Andrew Hill Mosaic Select discs get played). My brother gave me the Lee Morgan album. I'm into it but haven't had a chance to get more of his stuff yet. I also haven't brought any of my vinyl over to the station to start playing that... Thanks for the suggestion!
  12. I'm going to contact some labels & artists directly, but I wanted to put out a general thread to get in touch with folks. I do a 3 hour all-instrumental show every week on WRFL (88.1FM) in Lexington, KY. The show is mostly jazz (with some orchestral/chamber music and other things, as long as there are no vocals!), but I tend to play older stuff because I don't have copies of newer releases to play. So if you're a contemporary jazz group or label, I want to play your music and find an audience for it here in Central Kentucky! There are two other jazz shows on the station plus a modern composition show, a world show for international releases, and other more general format shows that would spin your stuff as well. A lot of the programming on WRFL is for lack of a better term 'indie rock', but there are a good number of general format DJs who focus on playing avant-garde, noise, and improvised music. There is also a jazz playbox in the main studio room for people to play cds from. You can private message me or contact me via the station if you'd be into sending music: Don Antenen c/o WRFL- 88.1 FM PO Box 777 University Station University of Kentucky Lexington, KY 40506-0025 (edited to add - you can check out the playlist of my show here - http://www.wrfl.fm/playlist?dj=Don )

  15. Bill Barton directed me to this forum from Jazzcorner.com . I recently started doing a weekly all-instrumental show every tuesday from 12-3 am on WRFL here in Lexington, Kentucky. It streams online from www.wrfl.fm My shows are pretty improvised and equipment problems at the station forced me to really change up the ideas I had for this last show. It was supposed to be a funky set of Herbie Hancock and Frank Zappa, but I'll now be doing that next week (equipment willing). I'm looking for new music to play on the air, so it can get heard in this town! In these playlists there are a few dramatic changes in musical genre, but these changes are broken up with grants and other things I have to play, 2/5/08, 12-3 AM Miguel de la Bastide - Mori Sonando - Flamenco - fire and grace Tomatito - Callejon de las Cantera - Flamenco - fire and grace Andrew Hill - Illusion - Mosaic Select Disc 2 Will Ridenour - Kosi Idina: So that Obstacles Are No More - s/t Heitor - Pequena Suite - Villa-Lobos Georg Phillip Telemann - Quartet from Tafelmusik 1 - Chamber Music Rahim Alhaj - Taqsim Maqam Saba - When the Soul is Settled Khan Jamal - Untitled - Drumdance to the Motherland Charles Mingus - Medley - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady Art Blakey - Moanin' - Moanin' Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue - Dialogue Andrew Hill - Ocho Rios Mosaic Select Disc !
