  1. Barre Philips has recorded many excellent solo albums. Call Me When You Get There is probably the best but the relatively recent End to End is a good one, too.

John Lindberg’s Comin’ and Goin’ is excellent.

  2. Really enjoyable blindfold test!

Track 1 is really fascinating. I agree with Jim in that it starts off Mingus-like and goes somewhere else. No idea who this is—alto player sounds like a Dolpy/Mariano hybrid, while some of the others sound like they hung out with David Baker in Indianapolis.

Track 5. Mats Gustafsson duetting with a bass saxist?

Track 10. That was nice. I feel like I know this pianist, but they aren't giving many clues.

Track 12 sounds like Jack DeJohnette on drums along with McBee, so I’m guessing Donald Smith on piano?

Agharta and Pangaea are great, but a bootleg known as "Another Unity" (from Jan. 22, 1975) is even better.  And music from the 1973 tour is also teriffic.  I really hope they release someday something like "Miles Davis Bootleg Series Vol. 9: Japan Tours 1973/1975".

Agree, the Jan. 22 date is spectacular. Cosey actually play drums on the last track and there's two Lucas solos during the second set. The Feb. 8, 1975 stuff is interesting, too, though the sound is poor--"Maiysha" stretches out to half an hour and the band brings out the "Honky Tonk" DNA to the forefront at one point.

Sometimes suddenly a single vinyl reissue pops up. It's hard to track down the sources and even if they are official or not. I know bootleg labels already messed with the catalogue. I would love to see a good vinyl reissue of Mal's Seagulls album.

Seagulls was at my local record shop lately--priced at $200!

Lots of discussion about the Blue Note version of Town Hall, and the status of the acetates. Both LPs have been posted in full on YouTube. This is record 1, side A. The other 3 sides can be found on the account page:

Wow, great to finally hear that. Some top-notch Ornette and wonderful to finally hear Izenson's "Taurus." Too bad ESP got involved as that would have been a fine pair of LPs. "Story Teller" got named "Doughnut" on the ESP release, while "Doughnut" matches up with the tune recorded as "Doughnuts" elsewhere.

Konitz and Braxton played together on Dave Brubeck's "All the Things We Are" Lp.   Did Braxton record with Konitz or Marsh elsewhere?

Braxton and Konitz did a couple of tracks together at the 1981 Woodstock Jazz Festival with Chick Corea. I believe there was a CD that eventually came out.

Braxton sat in with Marsh a few times. I think there is some bootleg documentation out there.

Didn´t Mingus use three fusion guitarists on "Three or Four Shades of the Blues" ?

And I think Miles on "Dark Magus" in addition to Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas used a guy Dominique Gaumont..... also on the studio album "Get Up with it".

On Dark Magus, Gaumont shows up for Sides 3 and 4 and while Cosey is mostly on percussion while Gaumont is playing, all three guitarists are playing at once during the wild rave-up at the end. There's some tracks with all three on Get Up with It plus the box set documenting that era.

I have a mid-70's RVG pressing of "Cornbread" so when I heard the warbling on the Tone Poet, I gave it away. But that warble was not from cutting too hot. No one seems to know what happened there. There were about 4 or 5 Tone Poet releases in a row that had some warble. Seems to have gone away though.

The hot cuts that I know about were Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships", Art Pepper/Chet Baker's "Picture of Heath" & Lou Donaldson's "Blues Walk" (Classic LP - not Tone Poet). There were a couple of others but I can't confirm them because I didn't buy them.

It's too bad for BN too as I'm sorta their target market. :)

Andrew Hill's Black Fire had bad warbling to the point that it became unlistenable and sounded like Alvin Lucier remastered it. Passing Ships sounds fine on my setup, but I'm lo-fi. I did like the Blue Train reissue.
