Complete Beethoven String Quartets, Amadeus Quartet

Not a court ruling, but law. There are 90 countries that have artist’s resale right legislation guaranteeing artists will earn a share from the resale of their work, including European Union countries, but not the US of A. Canada talks about it a lot, but no law yet.

I found an LP in good shape. While I think the 1969 version has a little more gusto, the original is fascinating hearing the quartet navigate this strange new sound world--a world which had the Stanley Quarter fleeing from. I enjoyed the Schuman, too--not a masterpiece and not always compelling, until it suddenly is! Great ending, too.

Original is an excellent album--glad to see it's being reissued.

Saw this in the local record store yesterday and, despite Mendelssohn never being on my radar, gave it a spin. Unbelievably nuanced, indeed, and I love how the dial back the sweetness on some of the lusher passages. I'm really enjoying your posts on these three box sets. Julliard Quartet has an admirably broad repertoire, going from daring modern choices to the classics to the hardcore classics to the softer side of string quartets. If I had to pick my 10 favourite string quartets, they've recorded 9 of them (the missing 10th, Feldman's 2nd, is as much endurance sport as music). I love their Ives recording and I see I also have the original Berg and Carter's 2nd/3rd in the stacks.

Came across this LP at a used record store the other day. Gave it a listen and the music was amazing, but vinyl was showing its age. so didn't pick up. I do have the Composers Quartet version.

Barre Philips has recorded many excellent solo albums. Call Me When You Get There is probably the best but the relatively recent End to End is a good one, too. John Lindberg’s Comin’ and Goin’ is excellent.

Really enjoyable BFT. Some good stumpers. 4 is a pair of AACM giants doing Maple Leaf Rag. 5 sounds like Henry Threadgill and Air?

#8 Is that Ralph Alessi on trumpet? With Frisell on guitar, sounds like it could be from a Scott Colley album.

Really enjoyable blindfold test! Track 1 is really fascinating. I agree with Jim in that it starts off Mingus-like and goes somewhere else. No idea who this is—alto player sounds like a Dolpy/Mariano hybrid, while some of the others sound like they hung out with David Baker in Indianapolis. Track 5. Mats Gustafsson duetting with a bass saxist? Track 10. That was nice. I feel like I know this pianist, but they aren't giving many clues. Track 12 sounds like Jack DeJohnette on drums along with McBee, so I’m guessing Donald Smith on piano?

Sad news. His compositions for Soft Machine were really interesting. Along with Garth Hudson, that's two great Lowrey organists to pass away this year.

Agree, the Jan. 22 date is spectacular. Cosey actually play drums on the last track and there's two Lucas solos during the second set. The Feb. 8, 1975 stuff is interesting, too, though the sound is poor--"Maiysha" stretches out to half an hour and the band brings out the "Honky Tonk" DNA to the forefront at one point.

Track 1 has a post-Thrust Headhunters vibe to it 2 First thought was Jon Lord, then Stockhausen, then Don Ellis. Took a minute, but Ellis indeed from the Fillmore album. Wild stuff! 3-7 dunno 8 Love this! No idea who. 9 JB! Fun BFT!

Wow, great to finally hear that. Some top-notch Ornette and wonderful to finally hear Izenson's "Taurus." Too bad ESP got involved as that would have been a fine pair of LPs. "Story Teller" got named "Doughnut" on the ESP release, while "Doughnut" matches up with the tune recorded as "Doughnuts" elsewhere.

Braxton and Konitz did a couple of tracks together at the 1981 Woodstock Jazz Festival with Chick Corea. I believe there was a CD that eventually came out. Braxton sat in with Marsh a few times. I think there is some bootleg documentation out there.

In Forces in Motion, Braxton is asked about this and basically says although he was impressed by Dolphy's work, "I was not as influenced by him as people have thought... So Eric Dolphy's work was very exciting to me, but I never felt that his way was my way."

Tim Bogert died, but the rest are still around. They were a fun band.

I've been there. Usual culprit is album gets hidden in the gatefold of another LP.
