  1. Young Buck,

I would spend the money on the monitors. Personally, I think microphones, mic preamps, and monitors are the most important tools a studio has. Your recordings are only as good as your mics and mic pre's and your mixes can only be as good as your monitors.

Why spend all that money getting a top of the line G4? Why not get a G4 800Mhz machine or even a 733Mhz with a whole lot of RAM? Both of those machines would have plenty of power to run a full Pro Tools rig, much less the O2. Get one used and load it up with RAM.

For inexpensive mics, I recommend the MXL series. Also known as Marshall. They are really great sounding microphones and unbelievably inexpensive. The studio where we recorded our record has two of every mic Jim listed earlier in this thread. Coles, Neuman, AKG C-24s, etc. But he uses the MXL 2001 on almost every project because it has such a great sound. For the money, it can't be beat. The little MXL 603 mic that comes with it are great as well.

For the price, the Genelecs are probably your best bet, too. Although I've always found their sound to be a little harsh with digital equipment. But I'm not a professional engineer, just a hobbyist. :)

For more info on the Marshall mics, check out the MXL webpage.

  2. That is a total asshole move. People are so stuck in their own worlds. Watch what's going on ahead of you, not behind you.

What's worse is when people do that shit on the highway. I was coming home from Ann Arbor one evening (an hour drive) and this asshole two cars in front of me got mad at the guy that was behind him for some reason (the guy directly in front of me) and decides to slam on his brakes. Keep in mind, this is bumper to bumper, rush hour traffic on a highway going 70mph and this jerk slams on his brakes.

So the guy directly behind him slams on his, I slam on mine, almost running into the guy in front on me, a whole chain reaction ensues. The ass-hat that originally slammed on his brakes speeds away. Then when everyone catches back up to him, he DOES IT AGAIN!

I was so mad that I almost ran into the guy in front of me twice that I followed the jerk for about 5 or 6 miles. He eventually noticed that I was following him, although I didn't have my brights on and I wasn't on his ass. He then slows way way down. By this time we're beyond downtown and on a part of the freeway that is less populated with cars.

He eventually pulls over and comes to a complete stop. I do the same. I get out of my van and started to walk up to his window and I can tell by his reaction that he's scared as hell! I'm 6'4", about 190 lbs. I had a big black wool coat on. I'm sure I looked mean (although I'm not a mean person).

He rolls his window down and I say, "What the hell are you doing? I almost rear-ended that car back there because you're slamming on your brakes like a fool?"

He says, "What are you doing following me?"

I said, "Man, you can't do that shit! You could've caused a multi-car accident. You could've injured a whole bunch of people. That's not cool, man."

He thinks about this for a second and then... here's the best part... he says, "You know what's not cool? YOU!" and then he speeds off.

    What a dipshit! :)

Some people have no regard for other drivers. They use their cars like weapons. It's so dangerous.

  3. I left graphic design shortly before the internet craze, but that mindset still forces its way to the surface from time to time. “Flash”? I’ve seen the end results, but I don’t have a clue to the programming. Maybe virginity is renewable!

Flash is very cool and quite easy to use.

    Macromedia Webpage

Check out the online tour of it's features (you'll need a flash player installed in your browser!) The only downside is that it's relatively expensive. But, I got a copy from my sister who works at Michigan State University and thus gets a nice educators discount.

  4. Jazzmoose is right.

The blue boxes correspond to the number of posts you have. A newbie is internet slang for a person new to the board. They have 0 to 9 posts. At 10 posts, you become a "member". At 100 you become a "Groover" like me! :) I made up the names. There are different names for different levels and the higher your level, the more blue boxes. It goes up to 10,000.

  5. I honestly still haven't been turned on listening to Memphis to New York spirit. I'm sure it'll grab me one day and I'll say "Whoa! Why didn't I hear this before?" I keep trying.

That's what happened with Understanding. I think I went in with preconceptions of what it was going to sound like and it took awhile for those preconceptions to fall away and to just listen to the music for what it is.

  6. jazzhound, most jazz artists are unaware of the recording format until they realize that they don't like the sound and this can go both ways.

I'm sure cost has something to do with it as well. We could've gone with 24-track 2" analog for our recording, but Pro Tools is cheaper! :)

  7. p.s., the hero outwits ETAOIN SHRDLU by having it typeset every book on Buddhism. The story ends: "See, George, it believes what it sets. So I fed it a religion that convinced it of the utter futility of all effort and action and the desirability of nothingness...It doesn't care what happens to it and it doesn't even know we're here. It's archived Nirvana, and it's sitting there contemplating its cam stud."

:lol: That is funny stuff! Makes me want to read the book!
