This is happening where I live and I see the same arguments on Facebook. "How can they tear down such a historic house?" But when it's pointed out that the house went up for sale and no one talked about buying it to preserve it, they all shut up quickly. Everyone's for preservation until someone asks you for money.

There was one tiny house by the beach that caused a lot of angst. This place was tiny - a 2-story ugly box that was maybe 1,100 sq.ft. It had 4 tiny 9 x 9 bedrooms on the 2nd floor and a single bathroom on the 1st floor. Fun! It reportedly had some old knob & tube wiring. Double fun! The new owners bought it for $2.2 Million and went for approval to tear it down. People asked the town to stop them. Yet, diagonally across the street, another, similar building was torn down and replaced with a modern beach house without a peep from anyone. The town knew they couldn't do anything about it so it got torn down. The mansion that's there now looks pretty good,  better than the old house in my opinion.

    Old isn't always better.

I think I saw a related news story, a year or two ago(?) but forget the name of the town. Got a lot of media attention.

Yeah, maybe I was a little harsh. I'll be sure to check out Guardians of the Galaxy 4 and Super Mario Brothers when they come to the Criterion Channel. 😹

This is pretty good, though the subject matter will thin out the potential audience. Per Wiki:

The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, co-produced among the United Kingdom, the United States, and Poland. Loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, the film focuses on the life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who live with their family in a home in the "Zone of Interest" next to the concentration camp. Christian Friedel stars as Rudolf Höss alongside Sandra Hüller as Hedwig Höss.

What a fantastic opportunity, Jim.  So cool that you're going to be able to see all four in the course of one week!

Outside of Bayreuth (and maybe music capitals like NYC, London & Berlin), complete Ring cycles must be VERY rare.

People keep track of them. 😉

In USA, scarce as hen's teeth. Surprisingly many in Europe.

2024 listings (all Wagner, incl Ring) Europe  US/Canada

  4. Excellent, enjoy!

I've seen 2 staged Rings, one in Bayreuth (Barenboim cond, Kupfer design) and the other in NYC (Levine cond, I dunno who designed). Used to have a VHS of the Boulez-Chéreau Ring, watched it quite a few times, but eventually ditched the player and donated the video.

I don't think they will be in any way similar. Whenever Ben's lands, it will be definitive. There can (and should) be more than one biography out on Mr. Taylor.

Also, as a writer, I know I have put some dumb shit in print (& not only on this board!) and it will follow me to my grave. The problem -- and not to pile on any one individual -- is when a reputation gets built on reactionary statements/tomes.

Yeah, I'm being a little unfair. I will check reviews and feedback when Freeman's book is published. I'm more likely to purchase Young...Freeman probably the library route (if available) or perhaps Kindle.

I mainly stick to the music these days. I used to read a lot of the jazz books, but less & less.

I still read jazz books, but have gotten much more selective, especially regarding titles I have to purchase rather than borrowing via interlibrary loan. I can envision going for a well-written and researched Cecil Taylor bio, but would wait to see some reviews/feedback before buying.

I admit to rarely reading liner notes (beyond a cursory scan) any more.

    What US dealer(s) have it??

Sorry, I was referring to my Belgian classical purchase.

I checked (my most likely suspects: DMG, Squidco, DG and Forced Exposure) yesterday and did not find any US dealers stocking the Ahmed box. Although Dusty Groove showed an upcoming 2-LP set on Astral Spirits (iirc) that might be a subset of the box.

  8. Me too. I put one in my cart to check shipping costs and was pleasantly surprised.

Second time it's happened recently: I bought some CDs direct from Graindelavoix (classical vocal ensemble) in Belgium and US postage was also reasonable. The package was cheaper than it would've been buying from US dealers. 👍

Bandcamp? - Where does this ship from??

Based on the bandcamp site quoting price in Swedish Krona (SEK), I assume Sweden.

I initially stopped there, BUT on review the shipping fee is actually quite reasonable, although I expect the effective exchange rate (net of credit card or Paypal surcharge) to be less favorable than quoted:

"that’s $45.69 USD, plus $9.59 shipping for United States."

    Elysium Furnace Works presents Chourmo

    Friday, May 17, 2024 @ 8:00 pm / VBI Theatre – 12 Vassar Street

EFW presents this cataclysmic trio of leaders — guitarist David Torn, alto saxophonist Tim Berne and drummer Tom Rainey — certain to ignite fire, intricate abstraction and passionate forward-motion.

    Also an April 27 concert:

Fay Victor's SoundNoiseFunk — the superlative creative vocalist Victor convenes her acclaimed, kaleidoscopic supercollision of maverick virtuosi — guitarist Joe Morris, soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and drummer Reggie Nicholson — to unleash music of unrelenting energy unlimited by tradition.

  11. Thanks, Rod and Niko.

A couple of early string quartets are on Youtube, but from a completely different recording:

    SQ #1

    SQ #3

They sound pretty good, but 7 CDs of quartets in "modernist idiom" is a lot for all but committed enthusiasts. I'll look for more to audition.
