doubleM
I love his playing, but I have precious few of his recordings as a leader. Hoping someone out there has read it, and can offer a suggestion.???
BeBop
If there are 'classics' in jazz autobiography, I suppose Hawes' is one of the tops (along with Art Pepper and a few others). It's real-er than life in many parts, but an indispensible perspective on people like Hawes (era, genre, location, etc.) Out of print for many years, it's a nice one to have back. JSngry
Yep. Classic. And not for the naive.
jazzbo
Pretty hip book. Pretty straight shooting, and the stuff between the lines is deep.
The Mule
One of the best. Some prett great writing, too. Hawes' "voice" really comes through.
mailman
Hamp's autobiography "Raise Up Off Me" is simply the best jazz autobiography you can read. Only Art Pepper's "Straight Life" comes close. A great book by a great pianist B)
