I agree that the Kenney book sounds good. I was given the Heffley a while back, but haven't read it yet.

I may be having a brain lapse but wasn't Soul on Ice the Eldridge Cleaver book from the 60s. One of my favorites at the time.

No brain lapse, that was the title.
