The Kenney book sounds quite good; I really liked his study of early Chicago jazz. (Would still love to read a book about later Chicago jazz--Mr. Kart? Mr. Litweiler?) I may be having a brain lapse but wasn't Soul on Ice the Eldridge Cleaver book from the 60s. One of my favorites at the time. No brain lapse, that was the title.
