  1. yep - all that, including what blind-blake said (except for the allusion to a clunker in this box with "OK, he's made some duds particularly on some of his later Warner Bros. records, which is why I might avoid the box and instead pick and choose his best" - IMHO, there's not one here).

again, the mastering for those in this set is better than any prior issues i've heard (and darn near sounds remixed too, but that may be a stretch). 'boomer's story', as all of them do (although i've yet to spin 'showtime') sound stunning. impossible to pick a favorite.

  2. I see from hmv.co.jp that Universal Japan have more SHM-CD titles coming (UCCO 5xxx). Nothing completely new I don't think but some titles that have only ever been Japan-only like Freddie Redd Piano East/West. But could be wrong and I guess when one of us gets round to making a list we'll know for sure.

i believe you're referring to a seperate 'prestige 7000' series....

  3. highly recommended!

at +/- $40.00, well under $4.00 per disc, it's also a steal. the quality of the mini-lp sleeves is the highest i've seen outside of japan. the masters used are obviously from the japan warner mini-lp series from a few years ago and sound excellent.

Rhino released an eleven-disc Ry Cooder box set on 11 November 2013. As the title suggests, 1970-1987 collects the American musician’s solo albums over a 17 year period (the Warner era), starting with his 1970 eponymous debut and calling a halt at 1987′s Get Rhythm. Expect the usual no-frills approach with vinyl replica card sleeves, housed in a clamshell box, with no booklet(s).

  4. buy it now for $1,949.99??? holy smokes! i hope you get it! i was just thinking of letting mine go for less than half that. "thinking" now in the past tense.... btw, did you cut and paste volker's description from 'livingwithmusic' for your item description?

    oh, and, uh, "welcome".

  5. well, on that score they don't, so you may like what you hear. however, they also don't show any sort of clear focus or real shape to the music. this is for lovers of mono as a concept, i think. if lovers of mono appreciate the focus being placed on the soloist - mission accomplished. otherwise, the overall resolution sounded somewhat dull to me in comparison to the other issues i have. 'jazz track' sounded quite nice, though.

  6. just a footnote that i was able to hear 'kind of blue', 'jazz track', and 'miles ahead' from this set yesterday. not my cup of tea. at all. hearing 'miles ahead' in mono was a truly strange experience.... that having been said, i'll follow the prices for the set on the secondary market and maybe scoop it cheaply someday (i know - how much cheaper can it get?) and maybe re-visit what i'm missing.

  7. etherbored — wasn't it Dimensions & Extensions that was offered as the bonus/gift?

    I think it was.

i am so wrong - and you are so right. sorry. thanks for the correction.... in any event, great to have the opportunity to scoop up this rarity!

I was hoping that they'd reissue Duke Pearson's Now Hear This!, which has only seen partial reissue. I looked at the new additions to the reissue schedule, not expecting to find it, and there it was! His music deserves to be out there; now if only the material from the Mosaic Select that isn't otherwise out would see reissue.

    can you clarify 'partial release'...?

  8. that copy control phase was primarily in the eu and japan (on new toshiba/emi releases only, oddly enough).

to what MG said above, in a year or two when you're sitting in your listening chair groovin' hard on some choice reuben wilson you're going to know that every pound was well spent. conversely, if you miss 'em they then (usually) become that much more difficult to find.

    and 'coldwater flat'....!

whaddaya make of all this, late?

  9. it was briefly available some years ago (in japan only) as a 'bonus' or 'reward' for buying a certain number of titles from the 'blue note works' series. the bottom corner of the insert that contained a replication of the liner notes had a small triangle with the catalog number of the title purchased that served as a proof of purchase that were sent in and 'a new conception' was then given as a 'gift'.

  10. one can dream, i suppose. it would be nice to have some curveballs, for sure, but those generally tend to come either when corporate isn't looking or are having a bumper crop year. many moons ago in either case. i may have to tip my toe into this campaign, but geez, i'm so loathe to buy any one of these titles yet again when what i have keeps me happy. especially seeing as how the superb three blind mice blu spec campaign is systematically vacuuming my pockets.
