still - for under $6.- a disc...
-
you're quite right - i do realize that what i'm hearing is a result of the mixing and mastering of the engineer. and of course who doesn't enjoy wilder's work? i'm just so accustomed to hearing most of this material in stereo.
so i take it that the b-side material of 'jazz track' is faithful to the original lp with only three tracks and the remainder of the 1958 sessions is not included. that's somewhat disappointing to me as i would have really enjoyed all of those given a nice mono treatment.
so wait just a second - this material is all completely remixed...? if so, then that's worth the price of a $48.00 admission alone.
-
" 'round about midnight " would be one cover that's hard to improve upon.
still looking for some good feedback on this set, but then again, i suppose we all are. fwiw, i've recently a-b'd all of my five "kind of blue" issues and found the gold sony mastersound issue to come out the clear winner. i find it so warm and rich in detail and quiet, really. would it be unreasonable to hope these share that warm analog quality? are these qualities one wouldn't expect to find in a mono recording?

And probably they'll be gone before I remember to order them (doesn't CD Japan maintain that "saved items" list? I had some in there, but it's all empty again after less than two weeks).
shouldn't be. these are just recently released and should be available for some time. now as to whether cd japan will have them, i can't say.
-
they do....
i'm very curious about this mono set. i'm about to pull the trigger on it for +/- $50.-, which one would think would be a no-brainer, but like a lot of people i have numerous issues of each already except for 'jazz track' and 'miles + monk'...

At least for the Dolphy the TYCJ is clearly beyond the TOCJ, which is not that radically different from the McMaster.
I also have TOCJs of Speak No Evil, Happenings, Maiden Voyage & Speak Like A Child. In a months time I can probably give you an answer on some of these titles.
These titles are not too loud. The Empyrean Isles has a bit higher volume levels than the McMaster, but is not excessive. Neither is the Dolphy or the Milt Jackson. The TOCJ Out To Lunch already is bit louder than the McMaster.
The TYCJ Empyrean Isles and Out To Lunch do, however, have more detail than any previous CD releases I have heard.
Edit: The Blue Note XRCD24s (I have Soul Station) also have a bit higher volume levels than the Hoffman/Grey SACDs (of which I have several).
just out of curiosity, what are you listening to these on? i know you previously mentioned you were a headphone listener, if i recall correctly. regardless, what's your player?

i'm too lazy at the moment to check the details - when was that jb's reunion side issued...? looks great.
and as hans said above, i've had my fair share of poorly p-vine transfers...

we've all heard the inversion of this decades ago from the mouth of wynton marsalis. a tree falling in the woods, indeed. hey, it has us talking. mission accomplished. glasper is simply donning the artifice of kanye west.

i should have known... it'll be interesting to see how they handle the holy grail of catalogs.
-
btw, i think it's interesting that these are being co-marketed by universal. did another round of corporate gobble occur while my head was turned?
-
w o w ! if anyone here attends, post a follow up as to how it was...

i saw it in the window of disk union and thought to myself that even though it's $10.00 per disc, the market for 15 discs of kenny drew playing in japan over the course of X years is surely limited at best...

These are all live sets from performances in Japan that are being made available for the first time in one large box. I wasn't aware that they were being issued individually.

Jimmy Smith
i was so stupid as to part with this one. i wonder if Big Al [tm] still has it....

hear, hear! mcfarland knew no other way. or if he did, it didn't make it to record.

'in the world' is considered a masterwork by the japanese. i was at pit inn and a guy sat down next to me with a canvas shopping bag featuring its coverart which was a conversation starter...
i'm into 'glass bead games'.

i don't know nothin' 'bout birthin no babies...

i have to agree. i recently reassessed the riddle sessions and i was struck by how generally unengaging i found her to be. that being said, there are moments where the material and her strengths do cross paths, such as 'skylark'. afterwards i reinvestigated the remainder of her capital and early asylum catalog and found that, of course, that's the material and production that suits her best.
-
that's how i do it. however, is this method correct for the latest whack version of itunes...?
-
the obvious solution would be to contact mosaic. they provided something kind of similar for me, albeit a few years ago.

i ordered them all (except for the mendes and de sah titles, which i already have). i had greater expectations of the adderley, but it's a fair enough date, imo.
the other records, especially the shank sides, shine....
-
i would have thought drew to praise her work in 'airport 75'....
-
I am not a customer for this set but if they boxed the Japanese releases I'd pull out Mr. MasterCard.
when i make my move, i'll pm you on my cache of them.
and yeah, the vsop sides, are among the best of the lot ('flood' and 'dedication' also being high watermarks).
