  11. damn. I was on my way home last night and asked myself, do I wanna stop by that gig or call whatsername up for a margarita at our favorite little dive. I regret to say now, I dove. nevertheless, a word about QO (aka Queer Oozing). maybe they should change their name to Quart of Oil cause everytime I hear them it's like getting my fluids change. I always feel like someone's opened both door of the gas chamber and let a whole bunch of fresh air wash out the stench of every day music. I know what you mean about dennis. he has such a mad butcher approach to the drums, flailing and flailing and every cut comes out perfectly...whether prime rib or rump roast...it is as he hears it in its purest energy form. after all, isnt that the natural end to all our creative pursuits...pure energy? isnt that what we all strive for, to get to the point where the bibbling and scribbling, the pondering and rehearsing, fade into, or should I say fold back into the place it all came from...the electrical and chemical responses of the brain formed by the etherial, infinite, timeless desires of the soul? great jazz transcends the physical and mental requirements of the melodies, harmonies, et.al.. though most people (sadly, I fear, an increasing number) have difficulty zeroing in on the frequency, QO (otherwise known as Quantam Orizons) has the capacity to broadcast on a hypersonic level to all who strive to tune between the cracks and even jam a number of the lesser frequencies across the spectrum. jam on, QO (aka ?) the end. here's one of QO at white rock lake
  12. yeah, dennis is probably the closest thing we have to elvin in today's texas. I have to take a moment to huzzah gerard bendiks on the planet of drums. though never getting a foothold on the studio or commercial scene, gerard has developed into a world class rhythmatician. his very tightly loose polyrhythmic abilities are a joy to observe, let alone play with. he's thoroughly steeped in the art of the raga and one man african ensemble. if dennis is elvin jones, gerard is max roach. his flexible jammability makes him my favorite local drummer. if I had a diploma, clock and medal to give him, I would. but I'm keeping the ruby slippers.
  13. I had Dave and Co. come play at my White Rock Rhythms at the Bath House last spring. they sounded pretty cool. nothing too exciting. this fall, weve had The Innercity All-Stars...Denton band playing New Orleans street beat brass... The Mark Tonelli Group...straight-ahead light fusion originals and, more to my taste, Flipside Trio, with Dennis Durick on drums, Paul Unger on bass and Dave Monsch, a real reeder, who combine free improv and jazzrock fusion with nice abandon. I'm also looking forward to Circo with Pete Brewer on Jan. 16th. I think they take what dave z.'s been doing to the next energy plane (http://www.circomusic.faithweb.com/framesong.htm). then Jamal brings in his SMU world music ensemble in february. I've really enjoyed booking diversity. I prefer the out stuff, but I like all but the most predictable stuff. music without surprise betrays the primary directive. by the way, Paul Unger, Daniel Huffman (Ghostcar guitarist) and I are improving at the Spiral Diner in FW this sunday afternoon.
  14. great links. thanks.
  15. excuse me, I'm just trying to build up my postings so I can get over this tedious "newbie" branding. nevertheless, I actually Do have something to say... it IS nice to know dallas had a real scene at one point. along with bonnie and clyde and anonymous alley murders in deep ellum. oh, wait, I guess that's still happening. and famous robert johnson stuff no one had a clue was of historical significance till decades later. makes ya wonder what's going on right now that will emerge as "significant". will anyone 50 years from now be talking about Quartet Out or some pimpley 17 year old deep ellum rocker wannabe? some nobody who turns out to be an early 21st century legend? please understand, this isnt addressing the previous post specifically. I'm only asking why is the present always so blind to history? why cant people see what they have today and love it the way they love what happened long ago in the mists of yesterday?
  16. jerry is surfing the solar winds, beckoning ornette... "come dance, soul of moses. earth is no more. it's lost its shape. take one of my staffs. let's do the doodoo dance. let's do it on the sun and catch a few rays in the sides of our mouths." ornette hears him. he's thinking about it. he gave his hat to one of my students outside the remains of the caravan a few weeks back. he knows he wont need it on corona beach.
  17. jerry hunt would like knowing he was still alive in this most elusive of media. who even knows these words are here, really?
  18. last time I was in Bill's, and I'm talking 10 years ago, I was there to pick up money for "Flash to Bangtime" cassettes he sold and he made me wait forever. all he was really interested in was flirting with the 14 year old goths of the male persuasion. or is that males of the goth persuasion? I'm fairly certain the order didnt much matter. not that there's anything wrong with that. wait a minute...50 year old guy flirting with adolescent boys. maybe there IS something wrong with that...ya think???
  19. radio has all gone south terrible waste of a mouth. what used to be oh so cool has become a disgusting tool. so, pity the kids today who've never known it any other way.
  20. I started absent mindedly singing a song today...sounded sorta like something the cars would do...it was about living in dallas...it went something like... I'm not supposed to be here, baby I'm not supposed to be here, baby I'm not supposed to be here, baby I'm not supposed to be here.
  21. rod stasick? where do I know that name from??? and just in the last few weeks...hmmm.
