  1. Damn - I was just down the road (although in a nappy ) . No excuse, I know. I think the Ammons LPs did appear on Esquire (or possibly Stateside) - for sure the Coltrane jam sessions were issued by them. Pretty rare LPs - only in the few hundreds in many cases. Oh to have a time machine and a Leeds Public Library ticket ! Did we all live in Leeds in the fifties? MG Yes, Jimmy Saville as well! I knew about him, but not you and Sidewinder. MG You weren't looking in the right places.

  4. Noted - don't think I've ever seen an Esquire of that one. Wonder what the cover art was like? That I don't recall. I never owned it, but borrowed it from Leeds Public Libraries. Looking back, they were decidedly progressive for c.1960; e.g. they had many of the Gene Ammons Prestige jam sessions - on Esquire, too I think - 12" LPs, though. (You'll be able to correct me on that.)

  6. Actually, that was first on my list, moved to second only because of the tag "long wait". Great minds think alike!

  8. Jazz on DVD is a relatively new area for me. I've been a member of Lovefilm (U.K. equivalent of Netflix) for almost a year and only used it for cinema movies. Some days ago I misspelled a film name during a search and got Sun Ra instead! Realising there might be more, I entered the word "jazz" and got 800 items!! So I added a modest 32 to my rental list and the first arrived today: Maynard Ferguson and His Orchestra and the Tony Scott Quartet at the Prague Jazz Festival 1968. The leaders were hugely impressive, their Czech accompanists less so. Any recommendations for unsuspected DVD treasures which I can probably get from Lovefilm? If you're really into jazz DVDs, which do you think are absolutely unmissable?

  11. James Moody, Moody's Mood for Blues/James Moody's Moods (OJC/Prestige) Thanks to whoever reminded me of this one on the board a little while ago. Great stuff, which I last heard on Esquire 10" LP. (Sidewinder please note )
  12. Like the cool Picasso still life! (Don't tell me it's a Braque!)
  13. I suggest that it might be worth seeking out the "Complete Birth of the Cool" CD reissue that combines the studio tracks with all the live recordings. It includes the announcements, the short theme that is not on the Cicala LP, and more complete versions of several of the tracks. I kept my RVG edition for the sound on the studio tracks, though. Many thanks for that, jeffcrom! Yes, perhaps it's time to move on again. So far, I've had this stuff on 10" Capitol LP, 12" Capitol LP, Cicala LP and Capitol CD - mind you, that took 50 years! A lifetime of cool!
