  18. A space-age bachelor essential. I've not played this in years, much more enjoyable than I remembered. Excellent album. I am pretty awed by Michel Legrand. I would be amazed enough at his composing and arranging, but he's also one hell of a pianist and a very good, if idiosyncratic, singer. Did you ever see him in the movie "Cléo de 5 à 7" (1962) He basically plays himself but he is great. Fans of 60's French cinema will get a kick out it. I going to pick up that record asap. Saw Cleo de cinq a sept when it was released. Have been trying without success recently to hire it from Lovefilm.
  19. Duke Pearson, The Right Touch (RVG) from Vinyl Exchange, Manchester - apparently new for £3!
  20. Diz was leading a similar group the following year. "Siboney Part I" and "Siboney Part II" were recorded in NYC on May 25 1954 by Dizzy Gillespie, Hank Mobley, Wade Legge, Lou Hackney and Charlie Persip. I have them as extra tracks on Diz and Getz (Verve).

  23. I saw Hank play with a local rhythm section at Club 43 in Manchester in the late sixties - around 1967 IIRC. His sound was gorgeous, but he was definitely "under the influence". The gig was organized by club owner and one-time Maynard Ferguson sideman, Ernie Garside.
