  2. Just getting onto this one myself, thanks to aloc. Jazz Profiles is on every Sunday from 2 to 7pm Eastern time and deals with one artist each week.

  4. Maybe the granddaddy of the "Minors" spawn is Tadd's "For Europeans Only" written for the Don Redman band in 1946. Interesting! Hadn't heard of that one.
  5. Drummers who speed up the tempo destroy the music for me. Peter Littman has this effect on some tracks on Chet Baker & Crew. Surprisingly, in view of his sterling work with Mingus, Danny Richmond does this on a Zoot Sims date, the name of which I can't recall, as I sold it on. But I wasn't alone in my reaction; even the sleeve note writer called Richmond's drumming "over-enthusiastic" or something of that sort. Anyone know this record and can give fuller details?
  6. Now listening. Solo piano version of "Nica's Dream", followed by "Airegin". Great stuff! Thanks for the link.

  10. "For Dancers Only" seems also to have spawned a string of similar titles. There's Jimmy Heath's "For Minors Only" and I seem to remember "For Stompers Only" by Stan Getz in the early fifties, tho' I may be wrong!
  11. Another big band job. I don't have that one - weren't the arrangements by Oliver Nelson? MG Yes, it's in the Mosaic Oliver Nelson box.

  13. Quick look in Cook and Morton dates Happy Time at 1962. So it WAS Victor who brought "For Dancers Only" into the modern piano repertoire. I'm not too surprised, as there are other signs that he knew his pre-war jazz - Ellington and Fats Waller tunes in his repertoire, plus extensive big band experience, stretching right back to his days as a child prodigy drummer!
  14. "For Dancers Only" is a great tune. I was surprised when I found it on Victor Feldman's 1960 album, Merry Olde Soul, having only heard up till then the late-thirties' Jimmy Lunceford version of this Cy Oliver tune. So Junior recorded it as well? It's obviously a good vehicle for modern pianists!
