  1. Walter Pidgeon Arthur Dove Dick Diver (again!)
  2. Good to hear that Alan's up and about again. No sign of that always full gig list that used to be on his website, but this brought more than a smile to my face: https://www.alanbarnesjazz.com/post/manage-your-blog-from-your-live-site
  3. Yes, from Devon. Proud Mum and Dad turned up for a gig - with the ubiquitous Alan Barnes IIRC - in Wilmslow. (Incidentally, I'm thinking of going to the Wilmslow venue next month for my first gig since March 2020 to see Greg Abate and American pianist & singer Daryl Sherman.)
  4. Probably in a Frank Foster orch at Wigan in the 90s. Those names who cropped up as sidemen! Perhaps the most notable was Walter Bishop Jr in a 1980s Woody Herman orch. (I'm sure about that one!)
  5. Amy Roberts is an altoist and graduate of Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester who sounds a bit like Bruce Turner. (OK on Bruce Turner?) Saw Karen Sharpe on tenor with Nikki Iles on piano at RNCM and Karen again at Southport, this time on baritone in a British re-creation of the Mulligan Concert Jazz Band.
  6. Neal Cassady Jack Kerouac Dean Moriarty
  7. A classic which I've always liked. Saw bassist Earl May at a much later date, but not so late that I can remember who he was with. How do you like it, Peter? Plenty there to keep you busy, John. Good listening!
  8. American Gigolo Just a Gigolo Thelonious Monk
  9. Darius Milhaud Dave Brubeck Paul Desmond
  10. Victor Feldman Blue Daniel Blue Mitchell
  11. The first (and earliest) Garner I heard was on Parker's "Cool Blues" where he didn't exactly fit in, but didn't ruin things either.
  12. Gil Evans Svengali Samantha and Sven
  13. In the 60s jazz snobs for whom hard bop was everything used to look down on my taste for Garner. But they were wrong.
  14. Steve Waterman David Schwimmer Dick Diver
  15. I got to hear the three I listed, not through recordings, but from (almost) live performances at Smalls and Emmet's Place on YouTube.
  16. Ah, yes, a Chilean artist. Enjoy!
  17. Melissa Aldana Sasha Berliner
  18. Billy Bass Dennis Mackrel Vincent Herring
  19. George Sand Barbara Castle William Pitt
  20. Hadn't heard of Zaid Nasser until I saw him yesterday on Smalls' livestream in something of an all-star quintet led by Joe Farnsworth with Peter Bernstein, Peter Washington and highly talented youngster Julius Rodriguez. The album is great. A couple of tracks are by Lou Donaldson, showing you where Nasser's coming from.
