  9. Sensational band, of course. Not overkeen on the more commercial vocals - prefer Mr B on the blues, my favorite "Jelly Jelly" with its great bop arrangement. Amazing to think that a guy who'd worked with Bird 'n Diz rose to the top of the pop charts. I'm old enough to remember that before the arrival of rock 'n roll in this country in 1956 the chart toppers were Johnny Ray, Frankie Laine and Billy Eckstine. Fascinating to hear Blakey in 1945 droppin' bombs in the manner of J C Heard or Don Lamond.
  10. The only time I saw Kenny was in his early days in the UK with fellow Canadian Art Ellefson in a small group drawn from the Dankworth orchestra led by Eddie Harvey. The date was about 1962 and the venue a club in Leeds.
  11. Yes, very nice. Not sure if this remains my favorite flute album, despite my bebop inclinations:

  14. Indeed. The UK government did a volte face and, contrary to the advice of the British Medical Association, the World Health Organisation and Pfizer, extended the 21 day gap to 3 months. I received a phone call cancelling my Jan 11th appointment for the second jab and have heard nothing since. Furthermore it was unlawful as I consented to medical treatment involving 2 jabs 21 days apart, but not to the revised arrangement.
  15. I remember buying this album in a small Manchester record store in the early 60s. I already had the "Now's the Time" session on a Clef EP bought in 1958 on a trip to Norway and bearing a sticker saying "Musikhuset Haugesund", but I lacked the Hank Jones session. In those days many shopkeepers would play you one track after which you had to decide whether or not to buy. After grumbling about this to a fellow jazz listener in the store - we shared a joke about requesting Miles Ahead as there was no break between tracks - Bird blew a sensational double tempo run and I paid my money and left with my new possession.
