  4. Sven Klang's Combo was often said to have been the finest jazz-inspired film. I was very impressed when I saw it years ago. IIRC it was a tragedy based on the life of Lars Gullin. https://bampfa.org/event/sven-klangs-combo-sven-klangs-kvintett-plus-jazz-dance https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075293/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sven_Klang's_Combo

  7. Now playing: Wonderful bop guitarist - largely unsung beyond these shores I guess. Sorry never to have seen him play. Was due to hear him in Wigan in the summer of 2016, but sadly Louis didn't live that long.

  10. That's a nice one! Have seen Lanny twice: once in the Bill Holman orchestra at the Wigan Jazz Festival and once sitting in with a local band in a club near here. Love his alto playing! Now playing:

  12. No, not with Crombie. Haven was a local guy and as far as I recall it was a solo session. Barber, of course, was a huge name at one time in the trad craze of the 50s. When I told a woman of a certain age a few years ago that I liked jazz, she said she too had liked jazz when she was young. Who did she like? - Chris Barber, Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk. A mass following at one time - no American equivalent I think of this very British phenomenon. Of course, at the time I was keepin' cool with Ronnie and Tubbs.
  13. I certainly remember the Barber-related skiffle craze from the late 50s. For a while no self-respecting tea chest could escape being turned into a bass! But Lonnie Donegan had moved on from the Barber band by the time I saw them. The only time I saw Donegan was during a gig by organist Alan Haven in a Manchester club when he was spotted in the audience to tumultuous acclaim.
