  2. Happily streaming! First one to grab my attention is Track 9. Very boppish - recorded about 1947? At first I think it's Illinois Jacquet, then realise it's a two tenor battle, so I think Ammons and Stitt. Other candidates are Dexter and Wardell, and I wonder if it was recorded in L.A. as it reminds me of their Californian stuff - particularly the rhythm section. Just my sort of music! Track 10's tune is very familiar to me, but not this version. Sounds like it could be composed by Mingus, but it's probably not! Sounds like a trio of baritone, guitar and bass - I can't hear any drums. I think there was a thread on sax, guitar, bass instrumentation - I'll have to try and track it down! Back for more later.

  6. Yes, I heard only the beginning and the end of the show - not too bad as 6 of the 11 tracks are in my collection. But Geoffrey is clearly aware of fans' frustrations re opera. He ended the show by announcing that it would be on again next week and invited requests to celebrate this!

  9. Jazz Library from BBC Radio 3: My old friend Brian Priestley joins Alyn Shipton to pick the finest recordings by Phineas Newborn Jr. Incidentally, Brian posted on this forum on 7 June 2008 under the name of virtualbp, sent me a PM, but hasn't been seen here since!

  18. No, I've never found anything I particularly wanted to hear. For me, it's always been outclassed by the festival in Wigan, also in Greater Manchester. However, my tastes are primarily for the sort of jazz recorded between 1945 and 1965, which means Wigan's repertoire has been just right for me. Over the years I've seen Mel Lewis, Frank Foster, Phil Woods, Claudio Roditi, Bill Holman, Scott Hamilton, Peter King, Alan Barnes, etc, etc, but the festival is now sadly reduced to a four day event because of public spending cuts: http://www.wiganjazzclub.co.uk/WIJF.htm
