    And how powerful is their transmitter now? When I lived in Chicago (5000 N - about a mile from the border) I had to drive to Evanston to get the signal. I taped a show for them once and had to ride around in my car to get the friggin' signal.

    So they turned off the transmitter and "stream" only? Thought we were talking about Chicago radio stations.

    No, no, no. WNUR still transmits over the air at 89.3 FM at 7200 watts from the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston. You can get the signal on the northside of Chicago (I live at 3200 N and get a clear signal). The Jazz show airs weekdays from 5am to 12:30pm Central (wnur.org for those out of transmitting range).

    And Chuck - if you're ever in Chicago, we'd love to have you into the station as a guest.

    I have heard quite a bit about Sony EX71/51 but im not sure about the sound or the cords.

    The EX71s are great-sounding low-end earbuds, but are made like crap. I've gone through several pairs, some lasting months, others days. The wires and connections are really fragile, and the wires' rubber coating wears off very easily. (My last pair went bad within the 30-day warranty period, but you have to spend $10 to send it back for a replacement.)

    I just got a pair of Shure e4s -- maybe not the best-sounding high-end plugs, but much better sounding than the Sonys. And the quality is incomparable -- the Shures are built to last.

    So if you may not be able/willing to spend $150-300 on a pair of really high-end buds, I'd strongly urge you to make the jump from $30-40 Sonys to the cheapest of the high-end models at $100 or less.

    Delmark DVD Recording with Fred Anderson, Harrison Bankhead, and Hamid Drake

    The dates for the delmark recording have now been changed to Tue & We 12 & 13.

    and Delmark will be taping Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble at Velvet on the 14th.

    If you've plunged into "Alchemia" you may find it interesting to hear the earlier releases with Mars Williams and/or Jeb's guitar. Otherwise, as a follower since the first proto-V5 gig in early 1996, I can recommend all their discs, though I think those recorded by Bob Weston (the recent Atavistic releases) and Malachi Ritscher (the early, live releases on Savage Sound Syndicate) best reproduce the group's sound.

    Some non-V5 highlights from the '90s:

    -- Steelwool Trio, "International Front" (Okkadisk, 1994)

    -- Vandermark Quartet, "Solid Action" (Platypus, 1994) [the track "Bucket" is a personal fav -- a prototypical KV composition with a sublime tenor solo, up there with his solo on "Cruz Campo" from the V5's "Airports for Light"]

    -- Barrage Double Trio, "Utility Hitter" (Quinnah, 1995)

    -- AALY Trio + KV, "Hidden in the Stomach" (Silkheart, 1996) [incl. the gorgeous "Why I Don't Go Back"]

    -- DKV Trio, "Live in Wels & Chicago" (Okkadisk, 1998)

    Of the more recent projects, the School Days, Territory Band & FME releases on Okka (as well as the Brotz-10, which you seem to have already discovered) are strong representations of KV's work within distinct contexts, as is the sole document of his solo music, 2002's "Furniture Music".

    The back sleeve of the original 'America' vinyl identifies Al Shorter on 'flugal horn' and Joseph Jarman on trumpet. They have photos of the players. No photo of Jarman but one of Lester Bowie playing trumpet.

    While we're on the subject, is there any recording date/location info on the "Pitchin' Can" LP? I have a 9-Nov-1969 recording date for the "Black Gypsy" record -- but I guess that may not apply to the "Pitchin' Can" track added to the "Black Gypsy" reissue, right?

    Three outstanding but more obscure ESP records, all led by musicians otherwise barely documented: the eponymous releases by the Byron Allen Trio, the Lowell Davidson Trio, and the Giuseppi Logan Quartet.

    The Marzette Watts record is terrific, and, IMO, Frank Wright's best work is on ESP.

    Of course Ayler's "Spiritual Unity" is one of the landmarks of 20th century music.

    Yes, I should have included Rothenberg among the masters.

    Another is Abe Kaoru -- if you think an all-solo record is a challenging listen, Abe's 10-volume Live at Gaia series (1977-78, DIW) might be the ultimate challenge!

    And I really screwed up by omitting John Zorn, whose 2-volume Classic Guide to Strategy (1983/1985, Lumina, reissued on Tzadik) is indeed a classic. (He recently released Vol. 3, which I haven't heard.)
