  1. http://www.stanfordjazz.org/jazzfestival/08_04.html

I don't want to miss this on Monday. I don't own a car, and most of my friends aren't down. I could rent a car, but since I just missed meeting trane fanatic at the George Lewis event the other day, I thought I'd try to be social for once... BFrank, Brandon Burke, trane fanatic, Big Wheel, BeBop, Bruce H, Jim R--are any of you (or anybody else in the SF Bay Area I may have missed) going to this, and if so, can I hitch a ride and pay for gas?

You can PM for my address, etc.

  3. Although not a lefty, here is a relative story about Bud Powell by Yetty Lee in 1955 Jazz Magazine, quoted in Francis Paudras' touching book:

"One night at Birdland, Bud Powell was at the piano, in great form. Art Tatum was in the audience. Tatum, known for being stingy with his compliments, said he thought Bud's left hand was a little weak. When someone repeated the comment to Bud, he took out a pocketknife, cut his own hand, then crudely bandaged it up and went on playing with the sefl-inflicted handicap. He showed such virtuosity in both hands that Tatum was dumbfounded. Some say he never forgave Bud."

  4. Its been hashed out hre before, but I still can't believe / understand the lack of titles available from their catalog.

Any word from MC on a Three Sounds Mosaic? I know they have said in the past that there is just too much material for one, but that could apply to Art Blakey or Jimmy Smith, where they still at least came out with a set of the sessions from a particularly cookin' and/or OOP month or year. Couldn't they do that for the Three Sounds?

And I've heard they think one wouldn't sell well--perhaps even because it is marketed as a group rather than individual names, but I know there are a lot of us who would spring for a set, including myself.

    Dizzy Gillespie's last great record.

Totally agree ! Very fine 2LP set, will dig it out.

This is one I don't have. I ordered it from Newbury, through amazon--it's only $6.99.

What is the title in reference to? Something Brazilian--Bossa? Blakey's nickname was Buhania, which is close--he's not on this album, though, is he?

  7. RE: Any difference between these and their previously issued Mosaics?

    I just noticed this thread:

    http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=21646

I understand now--duh, The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark obviously does not include the quintets or sextets of March 1, 1962, June 18, 1962, or September 7, 1962. Edit: Although, it does seem to include the quintet date of December 23, 1961 but not the quartet date of October 27, 1961 with different bass and drums. Hmmn. Clearly, the Mosaic is more comprehensive, as is usually the case.

  8. A few questions for you ever-informative sources of knowledge:

My father gave me this Monk 10cd box set a few months ago. It's a good deal with a lot of music, but not the best sound, but hey I can't complain about a gift.

Does anyone know the lineups, what these recordings were for, or any of that information? I think at least a lot of it in the beginning is from his blue note recordings because I have that box, and there is definitely some overlapping. Here is the tracklisting:
