Indiana jazz aficiando's Achievements

Newbie

Newbie (1/14)

  1. I have one by Emily....from East to Wes,,,that I continue to play frequently. Are there any other records she made before her early death?
  2. Wonderful lists already......some of mine not already mentioned - Art Lund - Bobby Short - Mabel Mercer - Susannah McCorkle - Lena Horne (with Lenny's orch) - Cleo Laine (sings Sondheim) - Richard Tauber (died in the camps in WWII) - Jacqueline Francois - Greta Keller - Yves Montand - Michael Franks
  3. David Baker has mentioned this program to me--I think he was listening to it in 1940s Indianapolis, partly because no radio station in Indy at the time was playing anything close to the music that you describe above. (If you're interested, IJA, I wrote a piece about Indpls jazz several years ago in which Baker mentions Randy's Record Shop.) I went to school with David and have known him since he played trombone (originally) - - and that radio station, WLAC, was, I think, one of those 50,000 watt signals. The music the jock played was excellent and was wide ranging actually. These 78s were called, unfortunately, race records - -but in my little town the record dept of the local 5 & 10 had a "special" section with all those artists. Blues, jazz were all mixed in together.
  4. I spent many good nights at The Cookery on University Place. Last eve I was there they had Ray Brown Trio. Re Mary Lou Williams - -there is a 33 LP, 10" that I once owned, but sold. It may be out there somewhere....really an excellent recording of her beautiful piano work.
  5. In the l950s I used to listen to Randys Record Shop from Gallatin, Tenn. They played all the southern blues artists like Lonnie Johnson, Wynonie Harris, etc., plus early Ellington, Basie, etc. His trademark sound was a Tarzan call when he loved a record, like Ellington's Creole Love Call. Does anyone remember this late nite profram?
  6. I grew up listening to Moonglow with Martin as a teenager in southern Indiana. I had to keep my radio down very low so my parents wouldnt know I was still up. His program was instrumental in my early love of jazz, cabaret singers like Blossom Dearie, Bobby Short and the artists who sang "the American songbook." Our own program here in Bloomington, Indiana - - originated by Dick Bishop and called "Afterglow" was modeled after Martin's. It's on WFIU the PBS station here and is now hosted by David Brent Johnson, who carries on that special kind of programming. Wonderful!
