  1. I was hoping that someone might be able to give me the lowdown on this band's recordings. A three disc retrospective has appeared and the descriptions sound intriguing. I gather it's a vibes led quintet with some vocals and there's 'spiritual' and 'modal' included in the descriptions which could mean anything!

    thanks in anticipation

  2. They appear kind of together on The Bishop's Move (Victo).

David, I've just checked that disc on a discog and it says "Evan Parker trio & Peter Brotzmann trio". Is it a split release or do they play collectively? If collectively, is the potential realised?

  3. Actually I'm saying that *while wanking*, self-regard is paramount.

    Therefore "self-important wanker" is tautologous.

Yes, Dan, I did realise that's what you meant. Thanks anyway for taking the time to provide further clarification.

Never has a throw away comment of mine been so analysed. Apologies for the tautology. I will be carefully mindful of what I type from now on ...

    now, back to Sting....

  4. What's the word for 'asshole'..in 'proper' English?

Pretty sure it's not 'proper' English and apologies if it offends anyone but "self important wanker" is the phrase most commonly used in this part of London.

What a silly phrase. What could possibly be more important to the self than wanking?

maybe true. I'd say it all depends on how much you think about it rolleyes.gif

  5. That does indeed sound an intriguing combination. I'd love to hear your impressions, relyles, if you have time

The Drake/Parker team will certainly provide Evan with a different rhythmic palette to which we hear him most regularly. I can somehow hear Evan's 'more jazz' (poor shorthand alert) tenor locking into their approach. I hope it's a sucess for them all and that he brings them back to the Vortex in London for his monthly gig - but that's just being selfish!

  6. And doesn't 'shitload' mean 'load of shit'?

and there I was thinking that 'shitload' meant 'a lot of' and has done for some time.

Relax... language can be marvellously fluid...I had no problem understanding the original post but maybe I'm 'lazy' too. For me, the effort was in the posting and initiation of a new topic

apologies in advance for any grammatical laziness or spelling errers

  7. Reid studied Senegalese drumming in the 1960s

His interest in Senegal can be witnessed on Daxaar released by the Steve Reid Ensemble in 2007. Reid and Hebden join a selection of Senegalese musicians in an album recorded in Daxaar, Senegal. A tremendously 'feelgood' album where the Reid/Hebden groove is very effectively augmented and 'groove' is the key word.

  8. For those worried about Grooves Inc order, my Haden box just arrived today. All fine, just a matter of days after despatch notification (29/3) so the within europe timescale seems very efficient. Placed my order 24/3 so more than happy with the service. Thanks again Romauldo for highlighting this source.

As for the sleevenotes? You'll need one helluva magnifying glass to read them on some of the repro sleeves. On others the font size is just readable without.

  9. AB is restarting Braxton House, so I guess it's safe to assume he'll be putting it out that way.

This is good news. I have a couple of titles on Braxton House, but missed a bunch of them when they first came out. Maybe he'll consider reprinting the back catalog as there is a lot of great music there.

All 8 CDs are still in stock at Downtown Music Gallery.

Really??? Aren't these as rare as hen's teeth nowadays?

I purchased Sextet (Istanbul) 1996 from DMG a couple of months ago. Price seemd very fair and in no way over-inflated considering limited availability - not a "hen's teeth' price. Definitely advise you check them out if you are interested in the Braxton Houses

  10. FWIW, 4 Comps (GTM) 2006 on Important is wonderful. Not too much obvious repetition, and Aaron Siegel is a fine percussionist.

    FWIW I wholeheartedly agree.

I'd struggled to 'connect' with previous GTM (my problem, not the music's) but gave it one more try with 4 Comps (GTM) 2006 and was bowled over. I think too maybe because there is less "obvious repitition". It was the presence of Siegel that probably tipped the scales for me as I'd enjoyed his work with Memorize the Sky so much. AB's playing is marvellous throughout and the band have a cohesion and understanding reminiscent to me of the Crispell etc quartet. Four discs is a lot of anyone's music but this is music to immerse oneself in.

  11. Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band at hammersmith Odeon, London. October 1977.

On the journey to the gig we read in the evening paper of the airplane crash that killed members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I remember a poignant recognition of this from the stage. Great gig. Haven't listened to his mucic in years now

  12. It gets better

have just ordered through Grooves-Inc (www.grooves-inc.com/index.php) - have been using them for the past 8 months without a hitch

They are selling the sets for 23.89 euros & free shipping (for any order above 20 euros)

Got both Haden & Threadgill boxes for 47.78 euros (approx 64.58 US$)

Most of the online dealers have the sets being made available as from March 26

Romauldo, thanks for the tip on Grooves-Inc,. Not heard of them before but just decided to put them to the test with the Haden set. A very fair price so if they deliver I suspect I'll be back for the Threadgill

  13. Thanks for the review Ubu. I'm seeing them in London on wednesday. I hope they do for me what they did for you! I saw Iyer play solo last year and that was a fascinating evening's music so really looking for to the duo

  14. I listened to the first disc - titled First Feedings. Three tracks, lasting just under 40 minutes. The sound quality is excellent. My first impression is that this is powerful and muscular music. Everyone is playing at full speed, with a vitality and skill that grabs you from the start and never lets go. It's not explosive like Frank Wright, as deeply spiritual as Ayler or Pharoah Sanders, or even as intellectual as Sam Rivers, but more direct and with weight. Everyone is on their game here, and it is thrilling to hear. I'll get to the other discs tomorrow.

Stefan, thanks for these impressions - feel this is becoming a 'must buy'
