First time I heard a big band live was Basie on this very tour. "All that air moving around you" is a fine way to put it. IIRC, the first tune they played at that concert was the semi-flagwaver "Stereophonic," and after the trumpets cut in I pretty much had to pick myself up from the floor. Think I was sitting just a few rows from the stage, too. And that sax section!

i´m not a musician, but is this ernie wilkins tune based on this?:

i don´t have any liner notes to basie´s Verve recording but it is mentioned anywhere?

I had some pleasant encounters with both of them through the years (I was a great admirer of their work, of Jackie especially), but after Roy passed I found out from a longtime close friend and sometime musical associate of Jackie's that Roy was a control freak in the top class who abused Jackie emotionally on a consistent basis. One of the big problems that Jackie had after Roy passed is that she pretty much didn't know how to do anything in terms of practical living -- finances in particular. Roy had swept all that over to his side of the table and kept Jackie in the dark. Fortunately, she had a male friend of her age who had been fond of her for years, and he tried his best to help her out/help her along. Lord knows she could sing like an angel almost until the end. BTW, she couldn't read music; everything she sang she learned by ear.

sad to hear this story. they are one of my favourites since ever and i´m sad to hear this story!

  4. six years ago was a disscussion here:

the july, 08. 1953 nbc stars in jazz program from birdland  is split with Billy eckstine.

it´s in the nbc Radio collection.

years ago i searched online at the library of congress and printed the results out, but i can´t find it now online anymore (too complicated for me)

the shelf numbers are at that time: for the 07/08/1953 broadcast: RGA 2532 B2

tracks are: lob; un poco loco; parisian thourofare; Dance of the infidels; lob.

shelf number for a 07/09/1953 broadcast: RGA 2531 B1; tracks are: Lob theme; Budo; Parisian t.; be still my heart; poco loco; l.o.b. theme.

shelf number for a 08/08/53 broadcast: rga 3757 (b1):  tracks: Budo, embraceable you; salt Peanuts; Billy eckstine sings: in my dreams, fine and Dandy among others. Note that mr. b. is not accompanied by bud powell; he has his own Pianist. with powell are george duvivier and art taylor.

i have only an old discography from claude schlouch, so this sessions are not in my book. maybe he can give more informations.

i will order the cd but i think it will be a hight Price when it´s from Japan.

Has anyone else downloaded this yet?  The John Kirby Sextet sides are the best I've ever head of this group (though I can't claim I've heard a lot). What kind of program was this broadcast?  Are there other extant broadcasts where there's a "narrator" reading the band leader's intros of the numbers?

"duffy´s tavern" comes to mind. maybe the kirby tracks are from this broadcasts?
