Last night, saw Kenny Barron and Stefon Harris at the Jazz Standard for the second and third sets. A great pairing. Everything Barron plays is beautiful, and as he said, Harris, who played with intensity and drive during "And Then Again," will make the vibes into an Olympic sport.

I really like Bechet and have almost all of the Blue Note and RCA Victor master takes, and the Bechet set looks great. My only concern is the many alternate takes. Can someone comment on whether the takes are that different from each other? I know this sounds like a silly question, but I'm trying to prioritize among these many great sets that are about to disappear. . . .Thanks!

Dick Wellstood is great, but I'm not sure if this new copy of an old Swingville album (Amazon link below) is worth more than $36,000! Or the $90,000 price from one re-seller!

My two cents: I have the complete Columbia and the Verve master takes, so I cannot answer the question precisely. I enjoy them both greatly, though on balance, I would go with the Columbia set. The last disc or two of the Verve set have some great moments, but sound more uneven to me. I think the songs on the Verve set are more drawn from the great American songbook, which is a strength of that collection if you like those songs (I do). I don't think you'll be disappointed either way if you like Billie Holiday.

Same here -- still waiting. I won't start to worry until 30 days from purchase given all of the bad weather and the reports of delays from others on the Board. But I wish it was here already!

I just received my copy of People Time as a gift from my wife. The music is beautiful, as others have already said, and although the fold-out liner notes are not an ideal mode of presentation as one person indicated earlier in the thread, the essays by Gary Giddins and Kenny Barron in those notes, IMHO, are very nice and add to the listening experience. Giddins says that Getz was preparing to write his autobiography with Giddins's assistance at the time of Getz's final illness. That could have been an interesting book.

The Stan Getz/Kenny Barron 7-CD "People Time" set is on sale for $35 on Amazon, which sounds like a good deal.

Saw Trio da Paz at Dizzy's in NYC with Harry Allen, Claudio Roditi and Maucha Adnet. They've had the last two weeks of summer at Dizzy's for the past several years (often with Joe Locke too) and are a joy to see.
