  1. My last remaining uncle just contracted Covid and passed away, at 94 years old.  He had all three Covid shots, but had been moved into a nursing home near Austin because he was no longer able to care for himself.  Apparently he somehow contracted Covid while in the care of the nursing home.

He's now the 3rd that I personally know who's passed away from Covid, although the 1st that had their vaccinations.

Not fair. I don't even want to put any stress on the Flu... A person can still get COVID and even die after the vaccine. It happens every day. When was the last time someone got Polio and Measles after being vaccinated?

There's a difference though. The polio vaccine prevents the recipient from getting polio.  This vaccine doesn't prevent Covid, it's not the magic bullet that the polio vaccine is.  Nobody claims that it is supposed to prevent you from getting Covid, except those that don't understand what the vaccine is.

It does help minimize the effects of Covid if/when you get it.  Per the attached table, the death rate for those who are fully vaccinated is 0.54 deaths per 100,000 in the U.S.  It's 3.47 per 100,000 among the unvaccinated.

That being the case, the vaccine clearly helps save lives.  I fail to understand why anyone would not want to get vaccinated.

And my hope is that at some point science develops a Covid vaccine that truly prevents Covid, like the polio vaccine does with polio.  I think we'll get there at some point.

I wish we would all put our trust in science to eventually solve this.  And continue to help save us in the meantime.

  3. Record stores:  Waterloo, End of an Ear, Antone's Record Shop (on Guadalupe), Big Henry's (I haven't been here, but it's associated with Antone's Night Club, so might have some interesting music)

Books: Book People across the street from Waterloo is pretty good.  Many authors do signings here (I have a few signed Anne Rice books from her visits).  There are at least 6 Half Price Books shops in the greater Austin area, if you're familiar with them.  Can be hit or miss, but interesting to browse.  South Congress Books is small but interesting.

    For live music:

    * The Mavericks are playing down at Gruene Hall Thursday and Friday night, but that's a little trek from Austin, down near New Braunfels.

    * Jimmie Vaughan and Mike Flanigin (who's a board member here on organissimo) are playing at C-Boy's on Friday and Saturday nights.

    * Bob Schneider is playing at the Paramount Theatre on Friday night.  He's a blast to see live.

    What's THIS?

It's a group created by Bill Rieflin to perform live ambient soundscapes with improvisations over the top.  At least that's the simplest description I can give.

I think this is their only physical release (and it didn't have a wide release to start with, only available at their shows for the most part), though they supposedly went into the studio and did some recording.  I don't think that ever came out though.

    Here's an old article about a performance in L.A. - https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-may-15-et-slow15-story.html
