Jazz Kat Posted Today, 10:21 AM
Mulligan, my favorite saxophonist. He's here with Johhny Hodges. Never really knew about him before this disk, which I learned of quite a while ago. This album has one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME, "18 Carrots for a Rabbit." Man that thing swings! Plus more fantastic material! 5 stars!
I got to hip to this one a while back. I agree. I found myself listening to it over and over. It just kept getting better. Very nice.

Spotted some of these hard to find Blue Notes in a recent visit to a shop I frequent:
JACK SHELDON..The Quartet & The Quintet....West Coast Classic...
GRACHAN MONCUR III......Evolution
VG shape/ may have light surface scuffs that do not affect play.
If anyone has been looking for one of these CD's, shoot me a pm...
As always.....Trades first/ then sales.
Thanks

I'm as much a fan of Cadence as the next guy, but it's really not much of a "sale" on those Mosaics if you do the math...works out literally to a couple of dollars "savings" on some as opposed to purchasing from Mosaic.
If that's the case I'd just as soon give my money directly to the folks that spent all the time and resources producing them...
Couldn't agree more!

The only ones that I remember are the:
Turrentine....Minton's
Henderson...State
Blakley........Jazz Corner
Burrell.........Blue Lights
and of course..........
Hubbard/Morgan...Night of the Cookers

I have noticed a number of Brubeck Columbia releases lately. I would like to know what board members think of Brubeck at Brandenberg Gate; Bravo Brubeck, Brubeck in Japan; Time Further Out; etc. etc.
I have Time Out, of course, and a couple of the Jazz at Oberlin, Jazz goes to College, on OJC but not that familiar with most of Brubek's Columbia stuff.
Maybe you can help both Edward and I out here!

Wolff,
I recently picked this one up as well. What do you think? AMG rates it the one to buy. Do not know if I agree with that assesment. I have number of Phineas' sessions. He is so good I sometimes think he is too good!!
Curious about RVG as well.
-
It is a great session. There is a haunting beautiful ballad whose title escapes me right now that is one of the all time best IMHO. This is a solid cd. I have not heard the RVG yet but the Conn is great.
Buy it!!

Not familiar with Blue Bash but agree on the others. I would add the 2 cd Conn. Introducing Kenny Burrell to the list.
My least favorite of the well known Burrell's is the date with Coltrane. For some reason that one has never hit me and I love KB.

While this is probably the best of the Columbia Dexters, I think it pales when compared to the earlier SteepleChases and (especially) the Black Lions.
The band was better in person. I think my (minor) problem with this date is - I think they had too much time in the studio and tried to be "perfect". This drags down a bunch of "major label" jazz dates.
Couldn't agree more. I never really got the Dex craze until I hit the Black Lion stuff. It is just too great. Now saving up for the Steeplechase box.Someday soon I hope!

And then there was the wristwatch.
Mike
That's IT! How it all got started. Of course, some of us came to the party a little late and missed out on the watch. Still had to find that CONN! Now that so many are out in regular release
Patience is definitely a virtue.

I started my jazz journey with Kind of Blue and The Best of John Coltrane on Atlantic. I started there because I didn't know what I was doing.
When I first started listening to jazz I used to pick up a Best OF from an artist I was not familiar with occasionally. My rationale was that I really wasn't sure I liked the guy that much so a Best Of ought to do me. It was always a mistake. Usually ended up getting the majority of the cataloge anyway. As I listened more my taste expanded and that guy I didn't think I liked that well suddenly became my favorite player.
I have a few that I have found at garage sales for a $1 or $2. I will pick those up for the car mostly. Otherwise I avoid the Best Of genre' as much as possible.

I am very happy to report that I have purchased and sold a number of items on this Board and have never had a problem with a seller or a buyer. I have made some good friends by doing so.Usually I just check to see how many post the person has. If he/she(? we need more female members) has a large number of posts I figure I am safe. My theory is he would rather do the right thing than be castigated by fellow Board members for failing to follow through on the deal.I remember Aric and the Monkey Business(as it euphemistically became known) episode and am always comforted. If a regular poster is willing to never post again without appropriate abuse from fellow Board members, I would say they must really, really, need the money or cd in question.
I usually try to keep all the pms involved in the transaction and I would not hesitate a moment for "outing" a Board member who seems to have an integrity deficiency. I mean really guys, we are talking about CDs here. Is it really worth NOT doing the right thing in this instance. Answering pm's and email seems pretty reasonable to me!
This Board is a great place where folks can come to discuss the music we all love. We may not always agree about the music but most of us can agree on things like common courtesy, honesty and integrity. Just as friends don't let friends drive drunk, I think friends try to protect friends from those who do not share these common values.
Unfortunately, I recognize some of the Board members who appear to be having problems in this instance. Based upon my past experience with them, I would have to rely heavily upon their view of events.
I would hope we would never have to post this type of thread on this Board but unfortunately I guess at times it is unavoidable. I would nonetheless like to thank those who do however. I not only think that it is appropriate, but it is required in order to alert fellow Board members. It is the only self policing mechanism that we have.
Now lets get back to arguing about jazz.

I had to go with Birdland if for no other reason than the MC announcer. (Can't remember his name right now...somebody help me out. I don't want to look it up)Pee Wee Marquette maybe??
Anyway, who can think of Art without thinking of Pee Wee introduce Mr... Art.... Blaaaaaaaaaakey!!!
Can't really go wrong with any of his live dates. I don't have Meet Me at the Jazz Corner--RVG but do have the others.
The Three Blind Mice date is excellent. I loved the Fuller, Hubbard, Walton line up of the Messengers.
