  1. All of Lateef's Impulse output is very worthy of more attention I think. Maybe not underrated by the fans, but definitely underrated by the company it seems. Hopefully the release of the Golden Flute is a sign of more good things to come.

    I'm very much a fan of 1984.

Could someone please give me a little help with brother Yusef Lateef. What do you guys consider essential? What about his Atlantic stuff?

Thanks. I am enjoying the thread.

  2. It's like asking which Rembrandt paintings are essential. I could never really pick.

If you have the money, buy all of them, if not, eventually you will buy all of them.

Seeing that you have the pre-Impulse Trane mostly, I wouldn't go crazy on the post-65 stuff just yet. Ease into it.:)

    My $.02.

I would second Dmitry's opinion. I think you will enjoy his later stuff more if you are well grounded in where he has come from. I love Ole' as well. It is one of my favorite Coltrane disc's. After this I would stick my toe into the water with Crescent, Quartet Plays, and Meditations...probably in that order. This should bridge you into his much later stuff.

    Just my two cents!! :g:g

  3. Have the following for trade or sale:

    1. Ronnie Foster.................Two Headed Freap

    2. Bob Broodmeyer............Traditionalism Revisited (West Coast Classc )

    3. Curtis Amy....................Katanga (West Coast Classic)

    4. Freddie Hubbard.............Ready for Freddie ( TOCJ )

****All discs are used in good to very good condition......may have superficial scratches which do not effect play........*****

Would prefer trade offers. Will consider all offers....1 for 1;1 for 2; 2 for 1; combination trade plus cash.

Looking for these in very good condition:

    Paul Chambers......................................Bass on Top

    Grachan Moncur III.............................. Evolution

    Sam Rivers............................................Dimensions and Extensions

    Lee Morgan............................................Delightfulee

Shoot me a pm in interested.

    Thanks for looking :):)

  4. It aint the ax.

    It's the player.

This is probably the problem. I would say that I prefer the accoustic bass but a lot of the reason for that is the player. It seems very, very, very few jazz bass players can resist slapping the strings and funking it up. To me it just ruins the tune IMHO. Makes it sound like I am listening to KC and the Sunshine Boys!!! Not that funk is all bad, don't get me wrong, but it seldom seems to fit in these instances.

    Just my two cents........ :g:g:g

  5. You are right Brandon, but generally the differences in CD remasterings (RVG vs TOCJ) are so much higher than the sonic difference between CD players that the latter is hardly relevant, as long as both players are of a good quality.

An option is to do two A/B tests and switch the discs between the players for each test.

More important is the possibility to compensate volume difference between players and discs, but most setups don't have that. It is very difficult to A/B two discs if the volume has to be adapted manually at every switch.

Brandon, you are correct in equipment choice and Claude is right on the money on this one as well. True A/B is very difficult to do correctly, especially when the volume levels are different.

  6. I recently heard Cynthia Scott do one tune on the radio and was very impressed. She has great range, good phrasing and could really swing. Anyone know anything about her?

    Would appreciate any comments.

    Thanks

  7. Frank, I agree; the Nat King Cole disc remains her high point.

    Moose,

I think for many of us that remains the case. I really enjoyed the tribute to Nat King Cole and do not believe she has ever topped that effort. I have kept purchasing her cds in hopes that she may rise to that level again but I have been mostly disappointed. I hate to hear that this is another disappointing effort from her. At some point I think many people will adopt your approach and simply quit buying her cds.

  8. Last night my friend and I went to see Wayne Shorter at the JVC Jazz Festival. :g . The band personnel were:

Wayne Shorter - Tenor & Soprano Saxophone

    Danilo Perez - Piano

    John Patiyucci - Bass

    Brian Blade - Drums

The band played 4 pieces that lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes and then played 2 encores lasting about another 20 minutes. I wish I could tell you which pieces were played, but except for the second encore (which was an avant garde version of Beseme Mucho), I had no idea what tunes they were playing.

    Evan,

I heard this same group perform about 2 years ago and I still have to say that it was probably the best jazz show I have ever seen. They were tremendous. I too had difficultly following all of the pieces they performed. Wayne seemed to weave his old tunes in through the whole show. To really appreciate how really great the show was I would suggest going back and relistening to a lot of his old Blue Note work. Then put on Footprints, live and hear what he is doing. It will bring back some great memories.

    Glad you enjoyed the show.

  9. Looks like another great list of Conn.'s.... I would say that I will go for these:

Horace Silver – The United States Of Mind 2 CD - all three albums

Andrew Hill – Dance With Death - includes alt of title track

    Jack Wilson – Easterly Winds

Larry Young – Of Love and Peace

Sam Rivers – Contours - includes alt of Mellifluous Cacophony

Have a little trepedation for the Silver because I am not overly fond of his late stuff but I can't wait for the rest of these. The Conn batch the last time was great IMHO.

  10. "Blue Spirits" and "Night of the Cookers" are two Freddie Hubbard albums that I have never heard before. Written reviews and discussion with others has given me the impression that these are not really up to par with Freddie's other Blue Note output. However, this board I trust most, and I'm sure most of you have heard these before. My question is....how are they?

    Blue Spirits :tup

    Night of the Cookers :tdown

    IMHO :g:g

  11. Verve's Norah Jones.

No - it's the other way round: Norah Jones is Blue Note's Diana Krall - as Diana was there first.

Beyond all envy for her success, compared to Norah, she sings and plays better. And swings more.

I don't rush out to get this, but I will get it someday, and I have to say I like her music.

Ditto....Almost exactly where I stand as well.

  12. I saw Wayne about 2 years ago with this group. At that time they had not been playing together that long. It was the best jazz show I think I have ever seen. As I recall, Wayne did not say much that night either. He only introduced a couple of tunes and I had some difficulty as well identifying all the tunes.( Usually could but it took awhile) I used to say Wayne jazzed his own jazz that night. It was a piece of art. I was so impressed.

That group's work is memorialized in Footprints, Live and is one reason I like that CD so much, but I have said all of that previously....

    Wayne Shorter

Think about it. Get Footprints and repost in about two months........I think you may see it differently, or then again, maybe not........ Just a suggestion. In any event you can always say you saw one of the real legends.

    Take care

  13. This is my favorite Jackie McLean session. As Brandon mentioned, Clifford Jarvis is amazing, the compositions are great and Jackie is at the top of his game.

I haven't picked up the RVG yet. Has anyone A/B'd it with the McMaster?

JUST MY OPINION, OK  ... I say that upfront because I am not trying to start another RVG debate. I have duplicates of a number of these, some I like better, some I don't. So far I have done a quick, very unscientific A/B of Silver's, Cape Verdean.... and McLean's Right Now. IMHO I like the RVG of Cape Verdean better than the old version and the RVG of Right Now less.

To me, the RVG of Right Now seemed a little less balanced than the original. Still love this CD in any format ...........but you asked..........

Like I said, just my opinion.. :g:g

  14. I just miss those Tower $7.99 sales. They were made for upgrading.

Yes, those where the good ole days. :g

I picked up a lot of BN and Verve titles during those sales.

    Cool!

At prices like that, you'd feel like a chump for NOT upgrading. :P

    Brass,

You just need to go here. Might have to wait awhile for the new releases but......

    alldirect.com

Order $99 and you don't pay shipping and probably no tax.

Good ol' days are here again :g:g

  15. Great, but I have already said that!!  :g  :g

    RVG March 23, 2004

I know - it was your enthusiasm that prompted me to believe that a seperate thread could have legs! :tup

    Jim,

Just wanted to make sure my vote was counted!! ;);) You know its "hanging chad" time again! :g

I do really like this one. I kinda of picked it up as an after thought and was very pleasantly surprised. I am glad you started the thread and I look forward to the comments as folks receive their orders. I hope more people did what I did on this one and give it a chance. It is a little out, but still very accessible. IMHO

  16. So why does everyone have it in for poor Mr. McMaster?  And if he's as tin eared as all the kids are saying, why does Cuscuna keep him on?

I've not yet heard the Reece Select so I don't know how this remastering job sounds. However, I do like McMaster's work. I used to not like him because I relied on the opinions of so many other McMaster detractors on various jazz boards. I don't mean the work that McMaster did on the 1980s Blue Note releases, rather, the work he's done recently, for Blue Note and Mosaic. For me, knowing that McMaster did the remaster on a given title, is a positive sign.

To my ears, McMaster seems to leave the original sound 'true.' Sometimes I hear slight distortions/buzzing in McMaster's work. As if he chose to leave the 'old' sound there, not touch it, to avoid altering the original recording. His style leaves the original recording sounding crisp and natural.

I like RVGs (and wouldn't give any of mine back!), but certain titles do sound a little 'electric' and over-powered. I'm not sure what other words to use to describe.

Malcolm Addey continues to amaze. I have no complaints about anything Addey gets involved with. His work is clean, crisp, natural, modern, yet still lets the 'old' sound shine through on its own.

I enjoy and appreciate the history of RVG and jazz. I like knowing that Van Gelder is involved with the remastering of his original recordings. However, I wouldn't mind if Blue Note and Mosaic replaced RVG and McMaster's names with Addey's name for future releases. Maybe start a Malcolm Addey series?

    wesbed,

This is an excellent post IMHO. I think you have nailed it. I try to keep an open mind on the RVG vs. McMaster debate.(see my post Reissue: RVG March 9 release) Still, there are some RVG's that sound better to me and some that don't.

Recently I have A/B'd the recent releases of Cape Verdean... and Right Now. To my ears the Silver, Cape Verdean is an improvement while I prefer the orignal McMaster of McLean's Right Now. Just my opinion, but I agree with your particular comment:

I like RVGs (and wouldn't give any of mine back!), but certain titles do sound a little 'electric' and over-powered. I'm not sure what other words to use to describe.

That is absolutely true in my book. Sometimes the RVG seems a little "bright". If the goal of reproduction is to approach a live sound then it doesn't work. That is my central complaint, but like you, I don't have many and I am not going to give my RVG's back!! :g:g

Anyway, enjoyed the post. Think it was right on.

  17. I recently purchased some of the March 23, RVG's. So far, Newk;s Time, Cape Verdean, and Conquistador. Just want to say that I am quite pleased with the Cecil Taylor. This is new music for me and I am enjoying it very much. I know there was some discussion among the board as to whether this one should not have been released as a Conn instead of an RVG. Probably still open for debate, but to the extent this one gets a broader audience as an RVG, I think that is a good thing. It is very free, but interesting on a first listen.

    That's it, FWIIW.

  18. I spotted a couple of TOCJ's today at a local used shop I frequent:

    Grant Green------Grantstand

    Lee Morgan-------Leeway

    e65027vj5cn.jpgf44464kkuu7.jpg

Both appeared to be in excellent condition.

    Any Interest?

I am mainly interested in trades and have been specifically looking for, Grachan Moncur's, Evolution, domestic Conn., and Paul Chambers, Bass on Top, but I am open. If interested shoot me a pm. If trades do not develop I would be happy to pick these up for someone.

    Thanks.

  19. Yes, the Mosaic is all the studio albums, but NOT this. Kind of an annoying omission, but then I wouldn't have the joy of getting the live set now, with all its extra tracks. So it all works out. Kind of.

I have had this one for some time and agree that it is a very good session. What are the extra tracks on the RVG?

    Thanks

  20. I was just wondering what all was out there and how it stacks up to his Blue Note albums.................................

Finally, I really wanna pick up the album the Messengers did on Impulse. Heard some clips today and they smoked!

    Any thoughts from youse all?

    Big Al,

The Messengers album on Impluse is very good.IMHO. It has only a slightly different feel than alot of his Blue Note stuff. I would highly reccomend that one.
